max temp v min temp

It can be seen from the scatterplot that there is a correlation between max temp and min temp. Generally, as min temp increases, so does max temp. The value of Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r) is r can be found by opening a calculator page and menu > statistics > stat calculations > linear regression (a + bx)

Correlation If a scatterplot shows a clear pattern between the two variables, we say that there is a correlation:

The scatterplot on the previous slide showed a clear pattern (the dots nearly formed a straight line). We say that there is a strong correlation between the variables x and y. Since the dots tended to drift upwards to the right, we say that there is a positive correlation

The scatterplot below shows an example of a negative correlation. Here the dots drift downwards to the right.

If the dots on the scatterplot appear to be randomly spread with no clear patterns forming, we say that there is no correlation:

Outliers If there are points that are clearly not following the trend or correlation set by the rest of the data, they are called outliers

Outliers

Form The form of a scatterplot describes the type of pattern formed. If a straight line can be drawn that follows the path of the dots, the scatterplot has a linear form.

Linear form

Non-linear form If the dots follow the shape of a curve rather than a straight line, we say that it is of non- linear form
