Correlation Acceptable terminology for the pattern of data in a correlation: *Correlation between variables *Relationship between variables *Association between variables Never a difference between variables or a cause and effect relationship between variables

Linear Relationships When the association between the variables on the scatterplot can be easily approximated with a straight line.

Nonlinear Relationships Not all relationships between variables can be well described with a straight line, and those that are not are known as nonlinear relationships AKA curvilinear relationships

Statistical Assessment of Relationships Pearson’s r – for quantitative dependent variables (interval & ratio) Spearman Rank Order Correlation Coefficient – for ordinal dependent variables Chi-Square – for nominal dependent variables

Multiple Regression Statistical technique based on Pearson correlation coefficients both between each of the predictor variables and the outcome variable.
