Diana Dea Diana’s Greek name was ͗ Ἄ . She was one of the twelve Olympians (major gods). Diana was goddess of the hunt, of the moon, and (later) of childbirth. She protected wild animals and young people.

Diana’s symbols were the moon a silver bow and arrows, the cyprus tree, and all wild animals, especially deer.

Diana’s festival is celebrated August 13. She is also often pictured with domesticated animals used for hunting: Hounds and horses.

Diane was aloof (especially from men), nature- loving, majestic, quick to anger, and athletic.

Her parents were Jupiter and Latona (pictured below with Diana and her twin brother, Apollo). Diana never married.

Diana and Actaeon One day while Diana and her band of maiden huntresses were bathing in a quiet pool of water in the woods after a hunt, a male hunter, Actaeon, happened to find them when he was out hunting. Diana was so angry to catch him spying on her and her friends as they bathed that she turned him into a stag (male deer). For the first time in his life, Actaeon felt what it was like to be hunted down: His own hounds chased him unrelentingly through the forest until they brought him down and tore him apart, killing and then consuming him.
