What are the sources of water pollution? Water pollution can come from many sources.

What is water pollution? Water pollution: the addition of any substance that has a negative effect on water. Pollutants: substances that cause water pollution. Sources of pollution are classified, in part, by how they enter the body of water.

Point Source Pollution Point source: a specific source of pollution can be identified. Examples: sewage flowing from a pipe, chemicals spewing from a factory. Pollution is easy to spot.

NonPoint Source Pollution Nonpoint Source: a widely spread source of pollution that can NOT be tied to a specific point of origin. Examples include runoff from farms, construction sites, and streets. Causes most water pollution.

Major Sources of Water Pollution Human Wastes: Sewage in Cities and Sewage in Rural Areas Industrial Wastes: Chemicals, Smoke and Exhaust, Heat Pollution Chemical Run-off: Run-off from farms includes pesticides and fertilizers, and run-off from roads such as gas, oil, and salt.

Water Pollution Solutions Solving pollution problems involves cleaning up existing problems as well as preventing new ones. Many pollutants are removed from fresh water through natural cleanup processes. Factories and farms are practicing BMP to prevent water pollution.
