Slavery in the 21st Century What versions of slavery exist today?

Terms to know: Trafficking: the illegal movement of people across borders for the purposes of exploitation.

Types of Slavery Child Slavery: children are used as slaves in many industries. Fear is a tactic used to force many children into the slave trade. As well, children can be sold by their families into slavery.

Types of Slavery Bridal Slavery: Young women and girls are sold by their families who can no longer afford to take care of them. Most of the time, these ‘marriages’ are against the will of the girl/young woman. Often, these girls are abused sexually, physically and emotionally by their new husbands.

Types of Slavery Sex Slavery: the forced sexual exploitation of women and children (most often).

Types of Slavery Bonded Slavery: A pledge of labour or services in order to re- pay a debt or other obligation. Often it is nearly impossible for an individual to pay off their debt.

Types of Slavery Prison Slavery: forced labour of prisoners without re-imbursing them. Goods from these prisons are manufactured and sold all over the world.

Types of Slavery Forced Labour Slavery: individuals (children, women, men) forced into working in hard labour industries: Agriculture, fishing, domestic work, construction, mining, quarrying, manufacturing, etc…
