Mr. Chapman Chemistry 30

Concentration is a ratio of the amount of solute in a solution. Key Point!

Breakdown the Definition...  Ratio – A comparison expressed as a fraction.  Solute – The substance that dissolves to form a solution.  Solution - a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. A solution can be in any of the states of matter.  Solvent - A substance that dissolves other substances, thus forming a solution.

Concentration = Amount of Solute Amount of Solution

1.Percent concentration a) Percent by mass b) Percent by volume 2. Parts per million 3. Parts per billion 4. Molarity 5. Solubility Curve

How do you figure out your mark on a test when you know the number of marks you got out of a certain number? The same kind of calculation can be made for the next two types of concentrations we will study Percentage Mark = Your Mark x 100 Total Marks

Pages of textSee formulas on board Percent by Mass A ratio relating the mass of solute to the mass of solution. Used when discussing both solid solutions and liquid solutions. Percent by Volume A ratio relating the volume of solute to the volume of solution. Often used for liquor proofs on bottles and some commercial cleaners.
