Pennsylvania Department of Education, Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network RtII Overview Whitehall-Coplay Middle School May 18, 2011 By the WCMS RtII Core Team

RtII Core Team Lots of work has already been done behind the scenes. 2 Pete

3 What is RtII? Pete

to an emphasis on what students learned. to using data as a beacon for instruction and intervention. to intervention. to decisions made collectively by building shared knowledge of best practice. to an internal focus on steps that staff can take to improve the school. to learning collectively by working together. to assessing impact on the basis of evidence of improved student learning. It’s about meeting kids needs! 4 Pete RtII is a shift…

RtII is: Collaborative/School wide effort Research based Standards aligned General education instruction Student achievement On-going assessment Tiered interventions 5 Lisa RtII in Plain Language

What is (RtII)? Enables early identification and intervention for students needing additional opportunities to learn high level content while providing benchmark students the opportunity to enrich and “grow” their skills and talents. 6 Alicia

7 What it is…. RTII – Establishes efficient and effective continuum of supports to address wide range of academic and social needs. Alicia

8 School-wide Framework!!! Karen & Laura Split this into 2 slides; what it is, is not

9 RtII is a(n) : - general education led effort implemented within the general education system; coordinated with all other services including special education, Title I, ELL, Migrant Education, etc. - system to provide instructional intervention immediately upon student need. - process that determines if the child responds to a scientific, research-based intervention as a part of the evaluation procedures. - alternative approach to the diagnosis of a Specific Learning Disabilities. Instead of using the well known discrepancy model, local education agencies may now use this diagnostic alternative. - school-wide framework! Karen & Laura

10 RtII is NOT a(n) : - pre-referral system. - individual teacher. - classroom. - special education program. - an added period of reading instruction. - a separate, stand alone initiative. Karen & Laura

11 Sandy

Why RtII? First graders in the bottom quartile in reading have an 88% likelihood of placing in the bottom quartile in 4 th grade and a 78% likelihood of remaining there through 8 th grade. Juel, 1988; Francis et al., 1996; Shaywitz et al., 1999; American Federation of Teachers, 2004; Neuman & Dickinson, Lisa

13 So why are we here to talk about RTII… - Education Trust reports (Casner-Lotto et al, 2006): - 72% of new hires are deficit in basic writing - 54% are deficit in mathematics - 38% are deficit in reading comprehension. - About half of all first year college students are taking at least one remedial course (The College Board, 2010). Whitehall Coplay takes the lead in RTII at the middle level!!! Chris

14 So why are we here to talk about RTII… Our incoming sixth graders have been immersed in the RtII framework since second grade!! Chris

Response to Instruction and Intervention Framework Core Instruction – 80% Supplemental Instruction – 15% Intensive – 5% Angie 15

Let’s put #s to the words ALL, SOME, FEW… 16 Angie

17 *The most crucial work of RtII implementation is ensuring quality teaching in the standards aligned general education core curriculum. Sandy They’re ALL OUR students……

The Components of PA’s Secondary Schools RtII Framework 1.High-quality classroom instruction/standards-aligned core curriculum 2.Relational support 3.Scientifically/evidence based instructional methodologies, interventions and strategies 4.Tiered instruction and interventions 5.Data-based decision making 6.Professional development 19 Chad & Jake
