7 Intervention Levels Tiers include increasing levels of intensity of interventions ◦Primary Instruction -- differentiated curriculum and instruction for all students (80%) ◦Secondary Interventions -- Targeted interventions for students (5-15%) ◦Tertiary Interventions -- Strategic and Intense interventions for students (1-5%) WASD Oct. 2014

8 Primary Instruction – Tier 1 Expectation = 80% or more of students successful with general education curriculum and instruction Assessment = Universal screenings for academics and social/emotional growth (behaviors) Intervention = Through differentiated instructional practices Roles and responsibilities = primarily the general education teacher WASD Oct. 2014

9 Differentiated Instruction Meeting diverse needs of diverse student population Differentiating based on content and student strengths and needs Choosing curriculum components to differentiate ◦Within the core curriculum ◦Consistent with state learning standards WASD Oct. 2014

10 Secondary Intervention – Tier 2 Expectation = up to 15% of students may be in need of targeted interventions Assessment = progress monitoring of student response to specific intervention must occur Intervention = Research and evidence based interventions should be used Roles and responsibilities = variety of personnel as determined by student need WASD Oct. 2014

11 Based on data analysis ◦Universal screening: All students are screened to determine progress being made ◦Assessments – Diagnostic, Benchmark (4Sight, DIBELS, GRADE etc), Formative, and Summative ◦Utilizes classroom and specialist teachers for targeted intervention Interventions and effective instruction go hand-in-hand Targeted Intervention

12 Tertiary Intervention – Tier 3 Expectation = up to 5% of students may be in need of intense interventions Assessment = progress monitoring of student response to specific intervention Intervention = Research and evidence based interventions should be used; unique intervention based on teacher expertise Roles and responsibilities = variety of personnel as determined by student need WASD Oct. 2014

14 Advantages of RTII Approach Provides instructional assistance in a timely fashion (not a wait-to-fail model; also identifies those who may be in need of enrichment) Helps ensure a student’s academic performance is not due to poor instruction or curriculum gaps Informs teacher and improves instruction because assessment data are collected and linked to interventions WASD Oct. 2014
