Centre for Energy, Environment and Engineering Zambia Limited CEEEZ INSABA Project Summary Objective The INSABA project aimed at a productive use of renewable energy and business advice. Target countries and Regions The project targeted rural and urban areas in Zambia, Botswana, South Africa and Namibia. Partners The project involved partner institutions in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the European Union (EU). Results - Support structure and knowledge base for RE improved - Productive use of RE in rural and urban areas are cost effective for selected business - Political decision makers vonsider INSABA approach as important for integrated rural development

Centre for Energy, Environment and Engineering Zambia Limited CEEEZ INSABA Background Relevance Rural sustainable development can best be achieved when goods and services for which a market was identified, are produced in an ecological way and with energy generated from renewable sources. SME are considered as important promoters of integrated rural development and also play a key role in the urban (informal) sector. In advising, training and coaching SME, which use and provide RE, INSABA contributed to development and poverty reduction as well as to a broader dissemination of RE. Opportunities RE Technologies for small business mostly are modular; investment costs depend on the technology. In nearly all areas at least one renewable energy technology can be applied. Technological advancement can be used to produce power from sun, water, wind and biomass and reduce costs. Market assessment and the preparation of a marketable business plan for business ideas avoid loss of invested financial means.

Centre for Energy, Environment and Engineering Zambia Limited CEEEZ INSABA Objective and Main Steps Objective The INSABA project aimed to support renewable energy based business and contribute to income generation. Main Steps The project promoted a “Productive use” of renewable energies through the following activities: Business Advice, Training and Coaching Interdisciplinary advisors (IAs) were recruited from locally established organizations and received training in RE-technologies and business management. Market analyses Verified that goods and services produced in higher quality or quantity with energy from renewable energy systems are actually marketable in a way that the revenue covers the energy costs. Matchmaking RE providers and users were brought together to drive a process leading to system designs and energy services that are better adapted to the specific needs of the users. Policy dialogue Relevant legal frameworks were reviewed together with representatives of the four target countries’ governments and other decision makers.

Centre for Energy, Environment and Engineering Zambia Limited CEEEZ INSABA Results Results Realisation of business in selected pilot regions demonstrate cost effective use of RE in rural and urban areas in a productive way. Experts and members from locally established organizations being in charge of training, advice and coach producers of good and services as well as of RET (train-the-trainer approach), are trained. Jobs and income with producers of goods and services as well as with RE-system providers are created. INSABA approach considered as important concept for a legal strategy for integrated rural and urban development and for the formulation of a favorable legal policy framework for sustainable energy application. Increased energy security and even lower costs by using RE technologies. Increase the opportunities for south - south business negotiations. Local renewable energy actors are networked
