President’s Message By Renae Paulson, RN April 30, 2010 Writing the monthly RNS President message poses many challenges for me. I have finally learned to search the internet for information, generally what the specific month topic for awareness is. May Day was not listed but as a child I remember May 1st as May Day. We made paper flower baskets in school, filled it with flowers and hung them on the doorknob of a neighbor and then ran away and hid before the homeowner saw who left it. It was exciting to be sneaky while at the same time having to purposefully identify someone worthy to be recognized for his or her kindness. Sharing information is much easier today with the aide of the internet, , texting, etc. We can learn all about health issues, people making a difference and designating days for specific attention to a specific topic. Having said that, it is still very important to verbally communicate with each other too. The following highlights some highlighted days in MAY. MAY 4th is National Teacher Appreciation Day MAY 6th is National Day of Prayer MAY 9th is MOTHER’S DAY May 6th – 12th is National Nurses Week May 9th -15th is Women’s Health Week May is National Stroke Awareness Month as is Military Appreciation Month And last, but not least, MAY IS NATIONAL HAMBURGER MONTH!!! Who knows how it really started. There is no official proclamation or inaugural year, but the idea sure seems to have taken hold. Seems that somewhere along the way, White Castle, arguably the nation's first burger chain, decided to "sponsor" the month long "holiday." Official or not, the hamburger will take up the slack in trumpeting the Meaty Month of May. And what better month? The popularly acknowledged start of the grilling season is Memorial Day.White Castlethe nation's first burger chain I would like to again recognize and acknowledge our distinguished guests and award recipients that blessed us with their compassionate talks about their work and the charity they choose to benefit from the RNS organization gift. RNS has a long history of supporting one another and those that excel in the patient care delivery process and this year was no exception. Thomas Gucker Award/Nurse of the Year is Margaret Zimmerman – Ventura Search & Rescue Physician of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Ann Vasile -- Long Beach Memorial Foundation The Non-Profit Award was presented to The Goodwill Fitness Center in OC RNS CARES Fund awards went to the 50+ Senior Care Network at Arcadia Methodist Hospital And to CAS of Pasadena. “Thank you” to the following vendors for their continuing generosity. Continuity Care home Nurses, Cindy Dixon of Special Care Nursing, and Barbara Tucker w/Dr. Heskiaoff office.
