NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme Rob Farace

Some BIG numbers… 1.3 million staff, working in more than 90 occupations and professions £100 billion budget 1.5 million people use the NHS every 36 hours Employing 1.3 million people and responsible for an annual budget of £100 billion - career opportunities really don’t get much bigger than with the NHS. No other graduate scheme can offer the complexity, challenge, and sheer scope of being part of an organisation that looks after 60 million people from their very first breath. Within the NHS there are hundreds of organisations – primary care trusts, acute trusts, foundation trusts, mental health trusts and others - each with their own management boards and budgets. And good management directly affects patient care. This is what makes a management career with the NHS such a uniquely powerful, life-enhancing proposition. And why we want to attract the brightest and best management talent to the NHS, to become our managers and leaders of the future.

The quality of leadership can make the single biggest difference as to whether organisations are high performing or not. “there is good evidence that better managed healthcare produces better results for patients” …and… “the key to improvement is better management of resources.” “good financial management arrangements are essential if NHS bodies are to meet their objectives and deliver effective healthcare to patients.” Why does the NHS need managers? Two Audit Commission reports have concluded that:

Or cut back on alcohol-related admissions to A&E? What can we do to reduce the 22,000 deaths every year because of alcohol misuse? Or cut back on alcohol-related admissions to A&E? Become part of the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme and you'll become part of something very special. Just to really bring the value of our Graduate Scheme to life - the current Chief Executive Officer, David Nicholson, was a product of the NHS Management Training Scheme. Consistently, the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme scores very highly, and makes us one of the top Graduate recruiters. So for us getting the right candidates on board is essential. Equally for you making the right choice of employer is critical…

“More managers than beds?” However you may have read in the press the criticism that there are more managers than beds in the NHS. This is not true! There is approximately one manager for every 36 staff or one manager for every £2.4 million of expenditure and there are 36,751 managers and senior managers in the NHS compared to 183,826 beds. Primarily we are here tonight to talk about our management training scheme however before we go into more detail on the management programme it’s worth pointing out the wider opportunities within the NHS….

Purpose of the Graduate Scheme The scheme exists to grow highly skilled managers who have the potential to go on to achieve senior leadership positions to improve health and healthcare. What we are looking for are people who are passionate, driven and committed to improving health within the communities across the UK. Stress highlighted words – and stress that this is who we want to join us. NHS in the media – with continuous renewal and modernisation Over the past year the Graduate Schemes have also ‘gone under the microscope’. A number of changes to ensure that the graduates of today fit the needs of tomorrows health and health care service were recommended by a high level review. For our 2007 intake we are able to offer an enhanced package, a newly designed scheme that has the public and the patient at the heart of both learning and practice; that will ensure trainees from the different ‘function’/specailisms learn together building relationships and understanding of the functions/other managers for their future roles; (more about Core Experience and Specialist Foundation learning later.) That offers all trainees YES All including our finance trainees, the opportunity for a Flexi or Out-Of-Box experience (more about that later.) Innovations for 2007 also include the principles of Lean Thinking – a tool currently being promoted in-service to increase efficient, productivity and performance e.g.unfold the brochure and talk through it. The brochure is hassle free all information required is contained on one A4Sheet (demonstration) Other ‘waste’ (time, manpower and cost) in our 2006 systems have been reviewed, whilst improving the quality of our service to you innovations through the introduction of e.g. On-line selection Tools, Choose and Book for Selection events (more about that later.) as enhancements will provide a slick service, with a customer-led ethos. http://www.nhsleadtheway.co.uk

Our Values Patients Staff Public The NHS is proud of its staff, but our values recognise the special relationship we have with our patients and the public. We all have a vested interest in making the NHS the best it can be, because all of us and our families rely on the NHS in so many ways. Ensuring we recruit the most able people to become NHS managers helps to ensure services for patients continue to improve.

Our Leaders Innovation Transformation Passion Our managers, as leaders of the NHS, share our values. This comes through in the passion they demonstrate; the innovations they work to implement as part of a talented team; and the transformations they achieve. The NHS is known for its great work-life balance, staff support and a great pension. As such a huge organisation, there’s a variety of roles that you can do which I find really exciting.” Nikkie Foster- General Management stream

Will the 91% increase in oil prices have an How will the panic in world financial markets affect the health of the nation? Will the 91% increase in oil prices have an effect on our supply of medicines? Will the higher cost of living lead to a lower standard of living? How will the credit crunch affect the provision of healthcare services in the UK? NHS managers are already grappling with the implications of turbulence in the world’s financial markets for the NHS. Not only does the NHS touch everyone’s lives, but we also have to be flexible and innovative in reacting to and dealing with factors that could affect the services we deliver.
