Colour Visual Arts 10

Colour has everything to do with the way your eye processes the action of light.

Our eye generally processes the spectrum of light that we see in a rainbow.

Many animals do not see in colour... Cats, dogs & mice have very low colour perception. Monkeys, birds & squirrels have good colour perception. Bees & butterflies have expections colour perception

Think in terms of the way they look and what they HAVE to see.

And if you think colour doesn’t matter to us.... try not caring what you wear, the colour of your room or imagining that everyone’s eyes were grey.

Colour is in our language. I lost my temper, I saw red. I was so blue. He was green with envy.

basic definitions for the quiz

Primary Colours these are the three parents of every other colour: red, blue & yellow

Secondary Colours are the first generation children of yellow, blue & red. When you mix two primary colours you get a secondary.

Tertiary colours are the result of mixing a primary and secondary colour. For example: yellow & orange make a yellowish-orange.

Complimentar y colours are colours opposite each other on the colour wheel. Complimentary colours are like a good couple, they bring out the best in each other.

Hue is the thing that makes something appear to be a colour.

Tint is the amount of white in a colour.

Shade is the amount of black in a colour.

Colour intensity is the strength of a colour.

Warm colours are those that evoke a heat or ‘warmth’. Think fire, sun and any colour that has a good amount of yellow. Warm colours appear close. Cool colours evoke a cool feeling. Think ice, water and colours that have a good amount of blue. Cool colours recede.
