The new railroad station was designed by Santiago Calatrava Valls. He is a Spanish architect and sculptor. The railroad station goes to other famous European cities like Holland and Cologne.

In Belgium, Mardi Gras there is known as the Carnival of Binche. What makes the carnival unique are the Gilles. Gilles are clown-like performers and are mostly recognized by their bright costumes, wooden clogs, and their wax masks. There are at least 1,000 Gilles in the carnival. The Gilles march through Binche while beating on drums with sticks to scare away evil spirits. Later during the day, they carry a basket of oranges and throw them out to the crowd. The oranges are considered good luck.
