4. Did You Know? Mardi Gras came to America in 1699 with the French explorer, Iberville. In the late 1700s masked balls were prohibited when New Orleans came under Spanish rule. In 1823 the Creoles convinced the governor to once again permit masked balls.

5. The first documented parade occurred in 1837 and developed a negative reputation because of violent behavior. In 1857 six men saved Mardi Gras by forming the Comus organization. They showed that it could be beautiful, safe, and festive.
