Gigabit Libraries Network Don Means, Coordinator Global relationship network of tech-savvy innovation libraries as distributed testbed and showcase environment for educational, civic and cultural objectives. GLN supporting wireless to extend Fiber To the Library (2007) fiber- connected libraries as community technology labs and hubs for Wireless From the Library (2013) FTTL plus WFTL Even bigger bang for $ GigLibraries.Net

Libraries WhiteSpace Pilot Public libraries using TV White Space (WS) spectrum devices to dramatically widen geographical availability of basic no-fee library wifi broadband. US libraries provide Internet access to 80 million people 40 million estimated access via wifi "This pilot program(FCC Rural BB Trials) will help us learn... how anchor institutions –including schools and libraries – can harness demand for the greater good of an entire community; and how new forms of wireless can reach deep into the interior of rural America." -Tom Wheeler, FCC Chairman ”Pilot will build and grow by leveraging resources that all types of libraries have to share.” - Kansas State Librarian, Jo Budler

Libraries WhiteSpace Pilot

Only National White Space Trial in US Affirms capability to rapidly and cheaply deploy thousands of new WS- enabled “satellite” library wifi hotspots in under/un-served markets. Demonstrates advantages of integrating universal compatibility of wifi with range and penetrating capabilities of WS to deliver broadband. Explores potential as hardened WS network for public/citizen safety and disaster readiness and response capability.

Current Library WhiteSpace Pilots: US: NH, MS, IL, KS, CO, CA, DE International: Philippines, Finland, Malaysia “It is amazing how persuasive it is when something actually works. Having libraries engage in showing (even modestly) what is possible in this new TV White Space environment is the most persuasive way to get others up and running.” - GLN advisor and Internet pioneer, Vint Cerf “The WhiteSpace Pilot will extend our successful Job Delaware Libraries services to further support business growth and entrepreneurship in Delaware.” - Dr. Annie Norman, State Librarian of Delaware

Project Proposal: -- Pervasive National WhiteSpace Anchor Network -- Mental Map: 50+ states with 16,000 public library facilities as dots reflecting population density. Overlay with 5 & 10 mile radius circles for rough WS coverage map. Shows potential population reach and proximity to adjacent networks. Napkinomics: Full buildout: est. $50 mil $500 per WS/wifi node WS hubs at all facilities will support 100,000 new remote library BB wifi nodes Barriers for some: - Inadequate back haul (rural) - Insufficient WS channels (dense urban)

© GeoTel Communications Image © GeoTel Communications Im Project Proposal -Next Phase: Expand Libraries WhiteSpace Pilot Invest $10 mil from multiple sources to fund 1,000 WS network projects - Creates 5,000 new no-fee library BB community hotspots - Increases access for millions of under/un-served public - Localizes deployment as 1,000 distinct project trials, at <$10K each - Integrates with other new/existing BB projects, wired and wireless - Supports policy on: infrastructure, spectrum, education, rural, inclusion.. - Partners schools, colleges, health and other community anchor institutions GigLibraries.Net
