Presentation transcript:

When cooking or baking, how do you make changes to the amount of ingredients a recipe calls for without making the food taste differently? For example: Ted is baking muffins for his class party. The recipe calls for a cup of butter, but Ted accidentally put a whole cup of butter in the mix. How can he save the muffins?

In this lesson, you will learn how to scale recipes by applying unit rates.

Let’s Review Unit Rate How many of a given quantity that you have “for every” or “per” another quantity.

A Common Mistake Units of MassUnits of Volume gramscups ouncesteaspoons poundstablespoons kilogramsquarts grainsgallons Confusing units of mass with units of volume.

A Common Mistake V = 2 gal M = 3 oz D = 3 oz 2 gal V = 2 gal M = 5 oz D = 5 oz 2 gal V = 4 gal M = 3 oz D = 3 oz 4 gal V = 1 gal M = 5 oz D=5oz/gal Confusing what mass, density, and volume are

Core Lesson Blueberry Muffins (makes 4 large muffins) 2 cups flour 1 tsp vanilla 1 large egg 1/8 cup butter 3/8 cup blueberries 3/4 cup sugar Blueberry Muffins (makes 4 large muffins) 2 cups flour 1 tsp vanilla 1 large egg 1/8 cup butter 3/8 cup blueberries 3/4 cup sugar New : Original 3 cups of blueberries per 1 cup of butter

In this lesson, you have learned how to scale recipes by using unit rates.

Guided Practice How many cups of sugar are needed if a whole cup of blueberries is used in the mix? Blueberry Muffins (makes 4 large muffins) 2 cups flour 1 tsp vanilla 1 large egg 1/8 cup butter 3/8 cup blueberries 3/4 cup sugar Blueberry Muffins (makes 4 large muffins) 2 cups flour 1 tsp vanilla 1 large egg 1/8 cup butter 3/8 cup blueberries 3/4 cup sugar

Extension Activities Research a recipe for a baked good of your choice. Pretend that you accidentally added 1 cup of one of one of the ingredients (you choose which one). Find the within-recipe ratios (or unit rates) of all of the other ingredients compared to the ingredient you made a mistake with. Find the between recipe ratio for your original recipe and new recipe. Write a new recipe card. How many people will your new recipe serve?

Research at least 3 different recipes for blueberry muffins. Which recipe would have the most blueberries per bite? Use calculations, tables, graphs, and diagrams to present your results.

Quick Quiz  This is Ted’s recipe for blueberry muffins. How many cups of butter are needed if a whole cup of sugar is used in the mix? Blueberry Muffins (makes 4 large muffins) 2 cups flour 1 tsp vanilla 1 large egg 1/8 cup butter 3/8 cup blueberries 3/4 cup sugar Blueberry Muffins (makes 4 large muffins) 2 cups flour 1 tsp vanilla 1 large egg 1/8 cup butter 3/8 cup blueberries 3/4 cup sugar

Quick Quiz 2) This is Ted’s recipe for blueberry muffins. How many cups of blueberries are needed if a whole cup of sugar is used in the mix? Blueberry Muffins (makes 4 large muffins) 2 cups flour 1 tsp vanilla 1 large egg 1/8 cup butter 3/8 cup blueberries 3/4 cup sugar Blueberry Muffins (makes 4 large muffins) 2 cups flour 1 tsp vanilla 1 large egg 1/8 cup butter 3/8 cup blueberries 3/4 cup sugar
