Workpackage 5 Domain applications : validation, evaluation, and on-site training Els Schulten

2. Objectives Develop system libraries in the form of repositories of models and dedicated tools Produce validation and evaluation studies making use of real-life installations, pre-pilots, pilots and industrial facilities Provide access to industrial facility for on-site training Partners: BPF, CIMV, TUD, DTU, NTUA, WUR, UoS, Helector, CERTH, EPFL, Imperial, Quantis, Arkema

3. Deliverables Systems library of lignocellulosic biorefinery including models and case studiesCIMV Systems library of water biorefinery including models and case studies WUR Systems library of waste biorefinery including models and case studies BPF Visits of Pilot & industrial Facilities supporting the education program Arkema, CIMV, WUR, BPF CIMV

4. Tasks T5.1 Lignocellulosic biorefinery (BPF, CIMV, TUD, NTUA, WUR, EPFL): Compilation/validation process and property models addressing lignin-based and cellulosic processes. T5.2 Plant based oil biorefinery (Arkema, NTUA, Imperial, Quantis, EPFL, DTU) : Compilation/validation of process and property models addressing vegetable oils- based processes and innovative process intensification Integration of individual equipments in their industrial relevant environment. T5.3 Water biorefinery (WUR, UoS, NTUA, EPFL) : Compilation/validation of process and property models addressing water-based paths to biomass production T5.4 Residue and MSW biorefinery (Helector, BPF, NTUA, EPFL, CERTH) Compilation/validation of process and property models addressing waste treatment paths T5.5 Integration of other renewable resources (BPF, NTUA, EPFL). The task researches interactions with other renewables sources the integration between the biorefineries in T5.1-T5.3 applied to both woody biomass and MSW.

5. Approach BPF Select 3 (?) representative case-studies eg woodchips  steam explosion (  enzymatic hydrolysis fermentation  end product) Execute case-study on bench-scale Evaluate results with lab-experiments and output from models Main information: yield (in relation to product quality) and productivity Use as input to optimize models Execute case-study on pilot-scale Evaluate results with bench-scale Main information: effect on yield (in relation to product quality) and productivity Use as input to optimize models Compare the different case studies and look for trends Information results in better understanding (and thus predictable) scale-up effects

6. Ambition BPF Understand and predict the scale-up effects of bio-processes in order to make each pilot run a success Training-center for bioprocesses with both theory (in collaboration with Delft University of Technology) and hands-on experiences in the pilot plant

7. POST-DOC With affinity for both modelling and hands-on execution of pretreatment experiments in the pilot plant

8. Pretreatment capabilities (available Q4 2014) Bench-scale Batchwise treatment of 4 kg bone dry biomass per batch Simulation of various Chemical and Physical Treatment processes of biomass, eg: Acid, Alkali, ammonia, organosolv, ionic liquids, oxidizing agents, steam expolsion Separation of C5 sugars from biomass Pilot-scale Continuous (2-phase) pretreatment of 50 kg/h bone dry biomass Simulation of various Chemical and Physical Treatment processes of biomass, eg: Acid, Alkali, steam expolsion Separation of C5 sugars from biomass
