SI Weights

Milligram A milligram is a very small weight No common items weigh this little

Gram 1000 milligrams make a gram What weighs a gram?

Kilogram 1000 milligrams make a kilogram What weighs a kilogram?

Tonne 1000 kilograms makes a metric tonne What weighs a tonne?

Question A certain book weighs 340 grams. A publishing company is mailing boxes containing 20 copies of this book to various bookstores. How much does each box of books weigh in kilograms. The box itself doesn’t weigh enough to matter. How much does 20 books weigh in grams? 340 x 20 = 6800 grams What is 6800 grams in kilograms? 6800 ÷ 1000 = 6.8 kilograms

Question Fluoride is commonly added to water at a rate of about 1 milligram per liter. If 2 million liters of water are in a water tank, how much fluoride is in the tank? There are 2 million (2,000,000) milligrams of Fluoride 2,000,000 ÷ 1000 = 2,000 grams 2,000 ÷ 1000 = 2 kilograms

Converting A kilogram is approximately 2.2 pounds

Question 3 kilograms is the same as how many pounds? 2.2 x 3 = 6.6

Question How many kilograms is one pound? 1 ÷ 2.2 = 0.4545

Question A baby weighs 7 pounds, 3 ounces. How much does the baby weigh in kilograms? 7 pounds is 7 ÷ 2.2 = 3.18 kg 3 ounces is 3 ÷ 16 = 0.1875 pounds 0.1875 ÷ 2.2 = 0.0852 7 pounds 3 ounces is 3.18 + 0.0852 kg =3.27 kilograms
