Chapter 27 Biddy write to Pip that Joe is coming to visit Pip in London What is Biddy’s concern? pg. 117 How does Pip feel about this? Who is he concerned about seeing Pip? pg Pip hires a boy named Pepper to work for him- is this necessary? How does Joe behave in Pip’s presence? pg. 118, 120 We learn that Joe has come to London to relay a message to Pip. Miss Havisham wishes to speak with Pip and that Estella has returned home and would be glad to see him. “Pip, dear old chap...God Bless you.” pg 121 What message is Joe relaying to Pip?

Chapter 28 In this chapter Pip returns home upon Miss Havisham’s request. Where will Pip stay when he returns home? Why? pg. 122 “ All other swindlers upon earth are nothing to the self swindlers, and with such pretenses did I cheat myself” pg 122 What does Pip mean by this? As Pip is on the coach to return home he finds that there are two convicts aboard. What is so startling about one of them? pg 122 What mystery is solved by the convicts in the coach? pg 123

Chapter 29 When Pip arrives at Satis house he learns that Orlick is now working for Miss Havisham. When Pip first sees Estella he hardly recognizes her. But it seems that despite his own changes, Estella still treats him like a boy. Pip and Estella take a walk in the garden. What does Estella reveal to Pip? pg 126 On page 127, Miss Havisham continues to tell Pip to love Estella even if she wounds him or tears his heart to pieces. She then reveals her own definition of love: “I’ll tell you,” said she, in the same hurried passionate whisper, “what real love is. It is blind devotion, unquestioning self- humiliation, utter submission, trust and belief against yourself and against the whole world, giving up your whole heart and soul to the smiter (one who hurts you)-as I did!” Do you agree with her definition? What does each part mean? At the end of the chapter Pip reveals that his treatment of Joe had brought tears to his eyes- but that the tears had dried very quickly. It’s clear that he cares more about what Estella thinks of him and Joe, rather then his relationship with Joe.

Chapter 30 How does Pip feel about Orlick working for Miss Havisham? What does he do about this? pg 129 When Pip returns to London, he sends Joe a barrel of codfish and oysters to make himself feel better about not visiting Joe. Pip reveals to Herbert that he loves Estella. Herbert informs Pip that he does not believe that Estella is a condition of Pip’s inheritance, as Pip does. What is Herbert’s advice about Estella? pg 131 At the end of the chapter we learn that Herbert is engaged to a girl named Clara, yet he cannot marry her due to his lack of employment.

Chapter 31 Pip receives a note from Estella telling him that she is coming into town and that Pip should meet her at her coach.
