NOVEMBER It is not October anymore. The leaves have fallen. Can you think of any special holidays that happen in NOVEMBER?

THANKSGIVING! Thanksgiving is an important American holiday. We gather together at the table for a feast. We remember some important American’s called PILGRIMS. What do you know about PILGRIMS?

PILGRIMS The pilgrims lived almost 400 years ago! They sailed on a ship to live in America. They were from ENGLAND. Where is England? Why did they want to leave?

ENGLAND England is a country far across the ocean. The pilgrims lived in England with a KING. They were not allowed to go to their own church so they decided to sail to AMERICA!

SAILING TO AMERICA They sailed on a ship called the MAYFLOWER. It took them 3 months to get here. It was very cold and dirty on the ship. There was little to drink. Many people were sick and died.

AMERICA America was very different back then! There were no cities or farms, just wilderness! They had to build small houses and did not have any food. The pilgrims were ALONE. How do you think they felt? Were they brave?

A LONG WINTER WINTER came very quickly. It was very COLD and snowy. There was no food to eat and the pilgrims did not know how to hunt for animals. What do you think happened?

SPRING! SPRING finally came. Many pilgrims had died during the long, hard winter. They wanted to stay and did not leave even though they were sad and starving. A visitor finally came to help. Do you know who it was?

INDIANS The INDIANS had been watching the Pilgrims. They were both scared of eachother but decided to keep PEACE. The Indians offered to help the pilgrims

FOOD SQUANTO was a very helpful Indian who taught the Pilgrims how to plant CORN using FISH. The Indians also showed the Pilgrims how to hunt and fish. The Pilgrims were VERY grateful!

The First Thanksgiving The Pilgrims wanted to find a way to thank the Indians. They had a big FEAST for their new friends. They played games and ate for three days!

Today in the USA We remember the Pilgrims and all of their struggles. We have a feast every November because we are thankful for their hard work! We call this day THANKSGIVING!

Giving thanks! The Pilgrims were thankful for their health, their new friends the Indians, and the freedom they now had in America. What are you THANKFUL for? ?
