The Heir of all Things

Where it all started – 2 Sam. 7:12-16 “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.”’”

Building the Davidic House – 2 Sam. 7:12-16 Key features: God would be a “father” to the Davidic “son” David’s son will rule forever As a result, when Israel expected their Messiah, they expected a Davidic king

Building the Davidic House – 2 Sam. 7:12-16 Keep in mind that a “son” could be a descendant several generations later.

Where it all started – Psalm 2:1-3 Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the L ORD and against His Anointed, saying, “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.

Where it all started – Psalm 2:4-6 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure: “Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.”

Where it all started – Psalm 2:7-9 “I will declare the decree: The L ORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’”

Where it all started – Psalm 2 Key features: The nations are in rebellion to God’s rule God sets up His King The King is God’s Son (Davidic language) The King inherits rule over the nations

To the New Testament – Matt. 1:1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:

To the New Testament – Matt. 1:1 When the NT opens, the first thing you find out about Jesus Christ is that He is the Son of David and has the legal right to David’s throne.

The message to Mary – Luke 1:31-33 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name J ESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

The message to Mary – Matt. 1:1 When Mary is told of Jesus’ birth, the angel emphasizes the promise to David and the rule of Jesus.

Common knowledge – John 7:40-44 Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.” Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?” So there was a division among the people because of Him. Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

Common knowledge – John 7:40-44 It was widely known that the Christ was to come from the seed of David.

In fact, they knew what it meant ! – Mt. 12:22-24 Then one was brought to Him who was demon- possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw. And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the Son of David?” Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”

In fact, they knew what it meant ! – Mt. 12:22-24 The signs Jesus performed proved He was the Messiah, the Son of David, and both the Pharisees and the people knew it! John 14:11; 20:30-31

The Prophet David – Acts 2:24-26 Whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the L ORD always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.

The Prophet David – Acts 2:27-29 For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’ “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day

The Prophet David – Acts 2 Almost sarcastically, Peter explains that David is either talking about himself or someone else, and it’s pretty clear, it’s not David.

The Prophet David – Acts 2:30-32 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.

The Prophet David – Acts 2:33-35 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: ‘The L ORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”’

The Prophet David – Acts 2 David knew: His Son (the Messiah) would die His Son would be raised His Son would ascend to heaven His Son now waits to rule!

Now, to Hebrews 1:1-4 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

The Greatness of Jesus He is: The Agent of creation The Agent of God’s word to us The Perfect reflection of God’s glory The Perfect expression of God’s character

The Greatness of Jesus He is: The One who has paid for our sins Greater than the angels The One who inherits everything The One who now waits to receive His rule

The Greatness of Jesus For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son”?

The Greatness of Jesus Jesus is the long-awaited Son of David. All of history revolves around Him, but…

The Greatness of Jesus It’s not just the past. It’s also the future…forever.

The Greatness of Jesus And, it doesn’t matter if we don’t care. The Son of David will rule forever.

The Greatness of Jesus So, who is worthy of your time, of your attention, of your allegiance?

David’s Son will Rule. What will your role be with Him?
