1 The Puzzle of the Resurrection

2 The Puzzle of the Resurrection

3 The Puzzle: What they knew
The Resurrection of Christ… The Puzzle: What they knew One of David’s descendants would rule as Israel’s King and establish an eternal kingdom. As an heir, the Son of David would be a “Son” to God His “Father”. …brings more than one salvation!

4 2 Samuel 7:12-14a, 16 “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his Father, and he shall be My son… And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you.  Your throne shall be established forever.”’

5 The Puzzle: What they knew
In response to the world’s rebellion, God would appoint His own “Son” as King to whom He would give the nations to rule.

6 “Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.”
Psalm 2:4-7 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure: “Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.” “I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.

7 Psalm 2:8-9 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’”

8 The Puzzle: What they should have known
It was necessary for the Christ to suffer before He was glorified.

9 Luke 24:25-27 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

10 Luke 24:44-46  Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,

11 Psalm 22:16-18 My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, And from the words of My groaning? For dogs have surrounded Me; The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.

12 Psalm 22:20-22 Deliver Me from the sword, My precious life from the power of the dog. Save Me from the lion’s mouth And from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered Me. I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.

13 Isaiah 53:3-4 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.

14 Isaiah 53:5-6 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

15 Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.

16 The Puzzle: What they should have known
The Christ: would die, but be raised, and have a unique relationship with the Father.

17 Acts 2:22-24 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know— Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken[ by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.

18 For David says concerning Him:
Acts 2:25-26 For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.

19 Acts 2:27-28 For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’

20 Acts 2:29-30 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,

21 Acts 2:31-33 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

22 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:
Acts 2:34-36 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”’ “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

23 They said to Him, “The Son of David.”
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” They said to Him, “The Son of David.”

24 Mt. 22:43-45 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”’? If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?” And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.

25 The Puzzle: What they should have known
Not only would Messiah have a unique relationship to God, but He would be both a King and a High Priest.

26 Psalm 110:1-2 The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” The Lord shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your enemies!

27 Psalm 110:3-4 Your people shall be volunteers In the day of Your power; In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning, You have the dew of Your youth. The Lord has sworn And will not relent, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”

28 The Puzzle: What we know
God the Father is the One who appointed Jesus both King and High Priest

29 “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.”
Hebrews 5:5-6 So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.” As He also says in another place: “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek”;

30 The Puzzle: What we know
The suffering and resurrection of Christ prepared both Him and us for the time when He takes His throne.

31 Hebrews 5:7-9 who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,

32 The Puzzle: What we need to know
The Son had to suffer and die because His priority was us! His suffering trained Him and made Him a perfect help to us His resurrection gives Him an unending life He can always come to our aid He will always rule

33 The Puzzle: What we need to know
When those realities are embraced daily, they should impact our lives on many levels.

34 The Instruction – 2:3-4 The Example – 2:5-8 The Result – 2:9-11
Philippians 2:3-11 The Instruction – 2:3-4 The Example – 2:5-8 The Result – 2:9-11

35 Philippians 2:3-4 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

36 Philippians 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

37 Philippians 2:5-8 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

38 The Puzzle: What we need to know
Especially at Easter, the risen Christ reminds us that it is not just about ourselves.

39 The Puzzle: What we need to know
To live as He lived we must never forget “the joy set before us” and that we are not alone on our journey.

40 The Puzzle: What we need to know
Like Him, we will no doubt face difficulties. Like Him, we have a Father who will make it eternally worth enduring them well.

42 The Puzzle: What we need to know
The past is over. The present is a fleeting instant. The future is the only dimension of time that continues to exist. We can only influence the future. Our actions are only significant as they relate to the future. The Puzzle: What we need to know The past is over. The present is a fleeting instant. Like Him, we will no doubt face difficulties. Like Him, we have a Father who will make it eternally worth enduring them well.

44 …that the puzzle will come together.
It is only then… …that the puzzle will come together.
