Step By Step: Old Testament 2 Lesson 3: The Kingdom of David Rev. Christopher J. Respass Antioch Bible Institute Fall 2012

The Davidic Monarchy And when he had removed [Saul], he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, 'I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.' Acts 13:22

The Davidic Monarchy I.David anointed King (1 Sam. 16:6-13) Key Verse: But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

The Davidic Monarchy II.David becomes Legendary (1 Sam. 17:24-27, 31-49) Key Verse : Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 1 Samuel 17:45

The Davidic Monarchy III. David, a man of Integrity (1 Sam. 24:1-7) Key Verse: And afterward David's heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul's robe. 1 Samuel 24:5

The Davidic Monarchy IV. David Unifies Israel A.David asked to be king by Judah (2 Sam. 2:1-7) B.David asked to be king by Israel (2 Sam. 5:1-5) C.David captures Jerusalem, the City of David (2 Sam. 5:6-10) D. David establishes Jerusalem as the central place for worship in Israel (2 Sam. 6:1-4)

What is your impression of David so far?

David, Bathsheba and the Lingering Effects of Sin A. David took several wives (2 Sam. 2:2) In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. 2 Samuel 11:1

The Davidic Monarchy B. David commits adultery (2 Sam. 11:1-5) Key Verse: And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, "Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?" 2 Samuel 11:3

The Davidic Monarchy C. David commits murder (2 Sam. 11:6-17) Key Verse: In the letter he wrote, "Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down, and die." 2 Samuel 11:15

The Davidic Monarchy D. David covers his tracks, but God is displeased! (2 Sam. 11:26-27) Key Verse: And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD. 2 Samuel 11:27

The Davidic Monarchy E. David is rebuked, repents and forgiven (2 Sam. 12:1-15) Key Verse: David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die. 2 Samuel 12:13

What do we Learn About Sin? 1.Eventually, sin always brings regrets. 2.God’s forgiveness does not void the influence of our sins on other people (e.g., Uriah died). 3.God can forgive sin, but the scars of sin remain (e.g., the sword does not leave David’s house).
