1 See Their Worth June 25

2 Remember when … When has your perception of someone changed for the better? When we see others as Christ sees them, we will treat them accordingly. Today we look at how David did not treat someone as he should have. David treated someone sinfully and tried to cover it with more sins.

3 Listen for misused authority.
2 Samuel 11:1-4 (NIV) 1 In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king's men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. 2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing.

4 Listen for misused authority.
The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?" 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (She had purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she went back home.

5 Temptations to Use Others
What words and phrases in verse 1 define the setting for this incident in David’s life. What happened one night when David couldn’t sleep? How did David misuse his authority as king in relation to the woman he observed? David was tempted … why should we anticipate temptations?

6 Temptations to Use Others
Agree or disagree? Temptation is sin Disagree

7 Temptations to Use Others
David yielded to his temptation. In what ways did this end up minimizing the personal worth of Bathsheba, Eliam, and Uriah? Where do we see people objectified or undervalued today? What are some ways we might try to use others for our own benefit?

8 Listen for efforts to cover David’s sin.
2 Samuel 11:5-9 (NIV) The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, "I am pregnant." 6 So David sent this word to Joab: "Send me Uriah the Hittite." And Joab sent him to David. 7 When Uriah came to him, David asked him how Joab was, how the soldiers were and how the war was going.

9 Listen for efforts to cover David’s sin.
8 Then David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house and wash your feet." So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king was sent after him. 9 But Uriah slept at the entrance to the palace with all his master's servants and did not go down to his house

10 Misuse of Authority Again, how did David misuse his authority as king in relation to the woman he observed? What transpired when Uriah reported to the king? Why didn’t Uriah take David up on the invitation to go to his own home?

11 Misuse of Authority What can these passages teach us about the progression of sin in how we deal with other people? How can we anticipate these kinds of temptations and stop ourselves from sinning in these situations?

12 Listen for how sins multiplied.
2 Samuel 11:14-17 (NIV) In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. 15 In it he wrote, "Put Uriah in the front line where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die."

13 Listen for how sins multiplied.
16 So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were. 17 When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in David's army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died.

14 Be Aware of Others’ Needs
What further plan did David now implement? In what ways did his plan show a disregard for others, their needs and interests? What is the danger of trying to cover one sin with another sin? Why is it difficult to acknowledge our sins of mistreating or devaluing others?

15 Be Aware of Others’ Needs
What are some warning signs that show we’re viewing people as objects or obstacles? What are practical ways to value others and treat them accordingly?

16 Application Evaluate. The tendency of our fallen human nature is to treat people as objects rather than as God’s image bearers. When we do this toward a whole group of people, we see prejudice and racism. Confess to God if there is a group toward which you do not treat with the same respect or worth that God desires.

17 Application Serve. Is there a person in your life you have treated more as an object for your happiness or called a friend as long as he or she can help you? Change your attitude and find a way to serve the person instead of seeing him or her as someone to serve you.

18 Application Restore. Broken relationships are a great hindrance in the local church. Maybe you have been on the receiving end of being used or mistreated. Ask God to help you to be reconciled, or to encourage to someone you know to seek reconciliation?
