Updates for 2010

General Partner Updates/Updates for Asha Continuous care so automatically students enroll in primary/high school. Teachers from nearby places help with the school. Also, older students return to help. Some other womenfolk from the village help in running the school by helping with cooking etc 54 students in early childhood centre. 18 more students will join this year – all kids less than 4 years. 4 kids going to reach 12 th grade, 3 in the 9 th grade.

Updates Contd. * Teaching materials are very old and dirty. Also, the number of students has increased. The school needs new materials. * Some students drop out of government school because of lack of uniforms * Books for those going to 12 th grade and who are not able to obtain it otherwise. * The school currently has a tin roof. This needs to be replaced with a concrete roof. * Only 1 teacher for all the students

Site Visit Report Site Visit report from Aug 2008 B.Ashok, his wife Jayashree, and kids visited the school More “Pukka” roads than earlier in Senchiagaram village Otherwise area similar to what it was in kids were in school that day (total 30 – 35 kids) Kids performances Kids were healthier because of the meal program

Site Visit Report, Contd. Some kids had grown up and joined the nearby government school Mariamma, who is the current teacher, and who has been at the school since its inception, continues to be a steady factor Folks in the village proud of the school and the students’ accomplishments

Site Visit Report, Contd. Due to the asbestos roof, the classroom was very hot  Learning aids procured in 2003 have undergone wear and tear Mariamma, the only teacher, appears to be overloaded. She could use additional help School needs more attention in terms of infrastructure More frequent Asha site visits recommended We have not been very consistent with sending funds to them. Need to become more regular in that aspect We should continue the food program

Questions?

FAQs Some FAQs at Asha, Seattle meetings. o How many rs are we spending per kid per year? o Does the amount being spent on infrastructure items (building schools, repairing roofs, etc. ) look reasonable? o Where exactly is the partner located? (especially for remote projects. Be ready to locate the project area on a map) o What is the graduation rate of the school? o What is the student to teacher ratio in class rooms? o What is the girl to boy ratio in the school? o What are the line items in the budget? o Why is the partner asking for more funding for line item N? (You will be asked this if there are changes in the budget line items) o Community opinion of the project. o What went well, what didn’t go as expected, what can be done differently.
