Biology Lab Tools By: Miranda Simmons Fall 2010

Essential Question: What are the important tools of the biology lab?

Simple container for stirring, mixing and heating liquids; commonly used in many laboratories.BEAKER

GRADUATED CYLINDER Used to measure volume, DO NOT HEAT

ERLENMEYER FLASK May be heated, used in titrations, glass

FLORENCE FLASK Used in making and storing solutions, can be heated

RUBBER STOPPERS Used to close off a piece of laboratory glassware

TEST TUBE Has many uses and can be heated, also used to hold liquids for measuring.

TEST TUBE HOLDER Used to hold or pick up test tubes while they are heated

TEST TUBE RACK Holds test tubes in a vertical position

TEST TUBE BRUSH Used to scrub small diameter glassware, has bristles with wire handle

DROPPER/PIPET Used to transfer small amounts of liquid, glass tip with rubber bulb

PLASTIC WASH BOTTLE Squeeze sides to dispense water

WIDE MOUTH BOTTLE Used to hold various solutions

MICROSCOPE SLIDE Glass slides used for observing specimens under the microscope

Thin piece of glass used to cover a specimen COVER SLIP

LENS WIPE Used to clean microscope lenses. Tear a small piece off of a sheet. Be sure to only use once.

FORCEPS Used to hold or pick up small items

DISSECTING NEEDLE Used in dissection of soft tissue

DISSECTING PROBE Used in dissection of soft tissue.

DISSECTING SCISSORS Used to make incisions while dissecting.

SCALPEL Small but super sharp knife used for surgery in a dissection lab

DISSECTING PINS Used to hold back soft tissue during dissection.

STIRRING ROD Used to stir and assist in pouring liquids

FUNNEL Used in pouring or filtering, can be glass or plastic

IRON RING CLAMP Iron ring with a clamp that fastens to the ring stand to hold glassware or funnel

RING STAND Metal rod fixed upright in a heavy metal base, has many uses as a support

INOCULATING WIRE LOOP Used in flame tests; used to spread bacteria on agar plates; metal

PETRI DISH (sometimes contains agar) A shallow dish used to grow bacteria

INCUBATOR Used to maintain temperature for growth.

SPATULA Used to collect transfer and/or manipulate chemical and biological material

SCOOPULA Used to transfer solid chemicals, has a lager capacity then the spatula

THERMOMETER Helps figure out temperature of certain liquids; usually alcohol inside

MORTAR AND PESTLE Used to grind crystals and lumpy chemicals into a powder

BALANCE Triple beam balance used for measuring mass

HOT PLATE Used to heat liquids. CAUTION: HOT

WARM WATER BATH Used to heat water in preparation of a warm water bath.

SAFTEY GOOGLES Must be worn at all times while working in the lab

APRONS Protects clothing and skin.

THERMAL GLOVES Used to pick up hot objects
