Setting Goals

What is a goal? A specific, measurable occurrence, object, or accomplishment that I would like to achieve, or obtain in the future. One where I develop concrete action plans to take me to where and what I want in my future. A goal statement is an investment in yourself; it clearly identifies what you want, how you will get it, and when you will get it.

Goals and Dreams What is a dream? The difference between a goal and a dream is “action.”

Types of Goals Short-term goals are ones that you will achieve in the near future (e.g., in a day, within a week, or possibly within a few months). 2-4 months Long-term goals are ones that you will achieve over a longer period of time (e.g., one semester, one year, five years, or twenty years). 5 or more months Enabling Goals are mini goals that help you reach your long-term goal.

Examples of Goals 1.Quit a bad habit 2.Begin/maintain fitness program 3.Eat a healthful diet 4.Drink adequate water 5.Drink less sodas 6.Reduce/quit caffeine 7.Quit smoking 8.Lose weight 9.Start your own business 10.Get a job

More Examples Learn a new sport/hobby/skill 12.Get up 15 min. earlier 13.Get more/less sleep 14.Study 15.Do something nice for someone each day 17.Read 18.Plan mini vacations 19.Manage your time better

Steps for Writing Goals Determine Your Goals by writing them down and being specific. For each goal, create 2-3 mini goals to help you reach the main goal. Make sure its measurable and be realistic. Choose a deadline or how much time you think it should take. Write down a specific reward or motivator for yourself.

Tips Always be flexible! Don’t give up if you miss a deadline, set a new one and try again! Find ways to motivate yourself Pictures of the end result Rewards for yourself or incentives Celebrations Share your goals with others to help validate them and it holds you accountable for accomplishing them. Make sure that all your goals are realistic and measurable.

Today’s Activity Create a Goal Journal Give it a Title and create a cover page Create a page format for your journal Determine 5-10 goals that you want to accomplish (May have more) At least 2 long term and 2 short term and the remainder your choice Each goal must be on a separate page. Create at least 2-3 mini goals for each big goal (may have more) Add dates and deadlines to goals and mini goals Find or draw pictures that will motivate you to complete your goal. Add extra blank pages for future goals as well.
