The church can help and it can also be helped. It can give and it can receive. OPPORTUNITY IS THERE! WHAT WILL WE DO?” - Edward & Gwen Weising, Authors of Singleness-An Opportunity for Growth and Fulfillment

THE CHURCH MUST REACH NEW TYPES OF “FAMILIES” & HOUSEHOLDS 1.SINGLE – PERSON 2.SINGLE – PARENT 3.STEP - PARENT 4.BLENDED – PARENT 5.NUCLEAR - PARENT 6.EXPANDED 7.GRANDPARENT 8.KINSHIP 9.UNMARRIED PARENT 10.HOMOSEXUAL PARENT 11.HOMOSEXUAL/HETEROSEXUAL 12.NON - FAMILY 13.COMBINATION OF ANY OF THESE

MYTHS - SOME THINK… Everyone should get married Something’s wrong with you if not married Staying single means I won’t be hurt again Singleness is the worst possible alternative Single women are irresponsible Single women are desperate CHRISTIANS MUST REJECT MYTHS AND STEREOTYPES ABOUT SINGLE ADULTS!

MYTHS – SOME THINK… SINGLE ADULTS… Have fewer problems than married adults Have more time than married adults Have more money than married adults Want your spouse Are afraid of making a commitment Are not complete till married Are always “on the prowl” Are losers Are lonely Are rich CHRISTIANS MUST REJECT MYTHS AND STEREOTYPES ABOUT SINGLE ADULTS!

MYTHS – SOME THINK… Older single adults: Have no/little energy Are feeble – minded Are feeble - bodied Are too old – fashioned to be relevant Can’t relate to married adults Others? CHRISTIANS MUST REJECT MYTHS AND STEREOTYPES ABOUT SINGLE ADULTS!

Single Adults – Risks Faced (possibly without relative or caretaker) Health issues Physical – Falls, accidents, other Mental – Memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer's, other (Dad) Financial issues Tax, retirement, estate issues (personal/parental) Assisted living/nursing care issues Poor management and/or less income Emotional issues »Loneliness – No/distant family (Dick – many issues) » Few/no friends

Single Adults – Risks Faced (possibly without relative or caretaker) Transportation issues Housing issues Safety issues Nutrition/meal issues Making decisions alone Others?

Single Adults - Risks To Take Risk being hurt – Love, help, give compassion Risk being misunderstood - Speak the truth in love ( Eph. 4:15) Risk your security - Move to a new location Risk Rejection/Disappointment – Flirt/Show interest Risk living the single life – I Cor. 7:8, Others?

Risks To laugh is to risk appearing the fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To reach out for another is to risk involvement. To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.

To place your ideas, your dreams before the crowd is to risk their loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is to risk dying. To hope is to risk despair. To try is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing and is nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love—or live. Chained by his certitudes, he is a slave, he has forfeited freedom.
