QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT Explain the difference between erosion and deposition. What forces cause erosion?

Wearing Down & Building Up Erosion: The process by which natural forces move weathered rock and soil form one place to another. - Sediment - Deposition * Weathering, erosion, and deposition act together in a cycle that wears down and builds up the Earth’s surface.

Mass Movement Gravity: The force that moves rock and other materials downhill. - Landslides - Mudslides - Slump - Creep

LANDSLIDES The most destructive kind of mass movement. Occurs when rock and soil slide quickly down a steep slope.

MUDFLOWS The rapid downhill movement of a mixture of water, rock, and soil. Often occur after heavy rains in a normally dry area.

SLUMP A mass of rock and soil suddenly slips down a slope. The material moves down in one large mass. Often occurs when water soaks the base of a mass of soil rich in clay.

CREEP Very slow downhill movement of rock and soil. Often causes objects like trees to lean. Often results from the freezing and thawing of water in cracked layers of rock beneath the soil.
