Review Weathering  Chemical and physical breakdown of rock Erosion  Water, ice, wind, or gravity moves weathered rock and soil. Deposition  Sediment is laid down in new locations.

Weather, erosion, and deposition act together in a cycle that wears down and builds up Earth’s surface.  Is there a beginning or end to a cycle?  How do these processes wear down and build up Earth’s surface at the same time?

What force moves rock and other materials downhill? Gravity Gravity causes mass movements Mass movements can be one of several processes that move sediment downhill.

Create the following chart in your SJ Type of Mass Movement SpeedSlope As we review notes, fill out your chart.

Mass Movements Landslides Most destructive mass movement Rock and soil rapidly slide down a steep slope. EQs can trigger a landslide Mudflows Rapid downhill movement of a mixture of water, rock, and soil. Occur after heavy rains in normally dry areas. Can occur on gentle to steep slopes. EQs can trigger a mudflow

Mass Movements Slump One large mass of rock and soil rapidly slips down a steep slope. Occurs when water soaks the bottom of soil rich in clay Creep Slow downhill movement of rock and soil Gentle to steep slope Results from freezing and thawing of water in cracked layers of rock under soil. Can tilt objects like trees and telephone poles (p.69)

Make sure your chart looks like mine Type of Mass MovementSpeedSlope Landslide (rock and soil) *most destructive Rapidly slides Steep downhill slopes Mudflow (mixture of water, rock, & soil) Rapidly slides Gentle to Steep downhill slopes Slump (rock, soil, clay) Rapidly slides Steep slopes Creep (rock and soil) *Can tilt objects Slowly Slides Gentle to Steep slopes
