Warm Up Debate whether the next personero should be related to the actual and teach us about the Manual de Convivencia, or if he/she should be any capable student to have such responsibility, and the teachers should teach us the Manual.

Islam  The Islam religion was founded by the prophet Muhammad in the 7 th century.  About 20% of the people in the world are Muslims.  Their God is called Allah.

Schism  The schism occurred when Muhammad died in the year 632 AD. Since he didn’t appoint a successor, there was the question of who was to take over the leadership of the Muslim nation as a caliph. There were 4 Caliphs in total. But after the second one died in 644c.e, with the third one Uthman came beginning the Umayyad dynasty. People complained about him so he was finally killed by a band of rebels in 656c.e. In this year the Islam split in two, both sides disagreed over who should be the rightful leader of the Islam.

Caliphs Caliphs  A caliph is the title taken by Muslim rulers who claimed religious authority to rule. In other words, Muhammad’s successor.

The Four Caliphs  After Muhammad died somebody needed to lead the community. Abu Bakr who was Muhammad's father-in-law and friend became the first caliph. He and the ones who followed where accepted as rightful rulers by the majority of muslims. Abu Bakr died in 634c.e and the Caliph Umar came. He let Christians and Jews worship whoever they wanted. He died in 644c.e and Uthman came beginning the Umayyad dynasty. People complained about him so he was finally killed by a band of rebels in 656c.e. Ali, Muhammad’s son in law and cousin agreed to become caliph. Umayyads challenged him causing a civil war. In 661c.e he was murdered.

Sunni Muslims  Sunni Muslims believe that their leaders are those that are voted by members of the Islam communities based on their capability to fulfill the required tasks.  The Sunni is the largest branch of the Islam. The majority (about 85%- 90%) of the Muslims all over the world belong to the Sunni branch.

Shiite Muslims  The Shiite Muslims believe that their leaders must be those who are direct descendants of Muhammad by his son-in- law Ali. Because Muhammad had been elected by Allah to serve as the first leader of the Islam faith.  Shiites account for about 10%- 15% of all Muslims.

Activity  We will ask the class a question, the group that first answers it right, will choose one member to do one of the three activities: bowling, soccer,or “mini basketball”. If that person does it correct, then the group gets the point. We will ask 5 questions, the group that has the most points at the end will win.

How did the Differences Led to Conflict?  The difference between them has lead to conflict because there are things they just can’t agree on and differences from back in the past for example that the Sunni accept the first four caliphs as rightful rulers of Islam while the Shiite don’t. Also that they don’t think of their clerics as the Shiite think of their Imams. War, terrorism, religious splits and, and social prejudice also lead to conflict.

Checking For Understanding  Question Jail Party:  We will separate the class into Sunni and Shiites. We will ask questions about the lesson and the team that first gets everybody out of jail will win. You go out of jail by answering one question correct.
