Santa Clara, CA

Agenda Who is Silicon Valley Power? Energy Efficiency Program value –To our customers –To our utility –To our community What we can bring to the table Case study –Owens Corning

Silicon Valley Power City of Santa Clara’s municipal electric utility Located 50 miles south of San Francisco System Statistics: –~500 MW peak –~3000 GWh sales (70% load factor) –90% of sales are commercial and industrial –$0.089 system average rate –Diverse resources throughout Western USA 28.5 % eligible renewable resources (Geothermal, wind, small hydro) 50% including large hydro

Type of Customers High tech headquarters and R&D –Intel, Sun Micro Systems, Applied Materials, National Semiconductor, etc. Datacenters Manufacturing –Solar and semiconductor –Paperboard mills –Fiberglass insulation

Energy Efficiency Programs are Good for Business Helping customers use our product more efficiently –Helps facilities compete and keeps them open Retains jobs, load, etc. –Attracts new business to community Benefits other customers by spreading fixed costs –Frees up resources to serve others –Reduces carbon footprint Provides contact with customers –Leads to communications on many issues

What our customers want Customers’ primary energy concerns –High reliability –Environmental accountability –Stable, competitive prices –Speed to market

SVP Industrial Energy Efficiency Programs Free Energy Audits –Limited scope due to resources and expertise Lighting, HVAC, Motor & VFD Rebates Customer Directed Rebates Compressed Air Management Program (CAMP) Keep Your Cool – Gasket Replacement Retrocommissioning

DOE Save Energy Now Program Reduce industrial energy use by 25% over 10 years Provides technical expertise –No cost energy assessments –Focus on energy-intensive systems such as: Process heating Steam Pumps Fans Compressed air

Case Study Owens Corning –DOE’s “Save Energy Now” program –SVP’s Compressed Air Management Program –Multiple energy saving projects identified

Owens Corning

Owens Corning Fiberglass insulation manufacturing facility –Major industrial customer since 1949 –Provides employment and customer diversity –Plant competes with other manufacturers and other Owens Corning plants

DOE Save Energy Now Program ( Owens Corning cont’d) Participated in Save Energy Now at corporate level At Santa Clara facility –Fan Assessments –Pump Assessment –Compressed air and Other Assessments

Fan Assessments ( Owens Corning cont’d) DOE Save Energy Now Program –Trained Owens Corning employees to perform assessments In Santa Clara: –2 fan assessments in 2007 –1 assessment in 2008 –2 additional assessments planned

Fan Assessments ( Owens Corning cont’d) 2007 Fan assessments resulted in 3 projects: –VFD to Penclone (M – Line) 361,000 kWh savings annually –VFD to Penclone (O – Line) 361,000 kWh savings annually –Oven Fan VFD 398,000 kWh savings annually –Projects will be complete in Fall 2008 Additional Project considered for 2009 –Forming Fan Optimization VFD Potential savings of 2,296,000 kWh annually

Pump Assessment ( Owens Corning cont’d) Pump Assessment performed in 2007 Resulted in review of treated water flows –Installation of VFDs Project completed in June 2008 Annual savings of 263,000 kWh

Compressed Air and Other Assessments ( Owens Corning cont’d) Compressed Air –SVP’s Compressed Air Management Program (CAMP) Same consultant as DOE Save Energy Now Program Compressed Air system improvements –3,064,000 kWh savings annually Project to be complete in Fall 2008 –Process Heat Assessment DOE PHAST tool was not applicable to the glass industry

Owens Corning cont’d DOE Save Energy Now Program Provided –Technical expertise and assessments –Training of Owens Corning personnel SVP will provide –Over $400,000 in rebates SVP and City benefits –Retained a major industrial load Diverse from many loads in our territory –Retained jobs Santa Clara Plant case study available at: pdf

Expand “Save Energy Now” Program Share information about program availability with other industrial customers Provide case studies to customers “Best Practices” presentation at quarterly customer meetings

Thank You
