Product Lifecycle Management © 2003 IBM Corporation The Industry Plastimo designs, manufactures and distributes high-quality parts and products for pleasure boats and is the European leader in magnetic compasses, boating safety equipment and life rafts The Challenge Plastimo designers were frustrated with the company’s complicated, sluggish, decade-old CAD system. In seeking a replacement the company focused on finding a system that would help it win more business by allowing virtual prototyping and electronic collaboration with boatyards’ drawing offices. The Solution After 18 months of pilot tests, Plastimo chose CATIA V5 running on an NT platform. Designers hailed its user friendliness, intuitive design tools and powerful modeler, and production engineers use it to produce tooling. The marketing department also gets electronic access to the 3D product definition. Online collaboration with customers on optimized product definition is innovative in the field and helps to differentiate Plastimo’s offering. The Customer Benefits Plastimo now has the capacity to develop 10 products per year instead of three. Each customer inquiry can be answered with 10 preliminary studies rather than one. Design time is cut 50%. “What is incredible about CATIA is the ability it gives to progress from an idea to a 3D model in such a short time. It’s a revolution for every user because of the way the tool brings ideas to fruition so quickly.” -- Bernard Geneau, Product Development Manager, Plastimo CATIA V5 speeds development and spurs innovation at Plastimo
