Types of Strokes Ischemic This type of stroke is caused by a blockage. Hemorrhagic This type of stroke is caused by bleeding in the brain.

Ischemic Strokes Causes Blood Clot Embolic vs. Thrombotic Stenosed artery Atherosclerosis Causes: High cholesterol diet, high blood pressure, smoking, heredity, and inactivity

Coronary Artery Disease Caused by atherosclerosis Most common cause of stroke Carotid endarterectomy most common procedure.

Signs and Symptoms Onset of Symptoms Embolic – rapid onset Thrombotic – gradual onset Signs Blindness or hearing problems Confusion Dizziness and/or loss of balance Numbness or weakness on one side of body Severe headaches

Additional Symptoms Other symptoms may include: Nausea and/or vomiting TIA’s Loss of consciousness Fainting, seizures, or coma

Diagnostic Tests 3 – hour time frame Primary tests CT or MRI Stent procedures Endarterectomy Thrombolysis

Stent Procedures Performed for Ischemic strokes. CAD Also a prevention method.

Endarterectomy Done for CAD Surgical procedure Incision made in neck Scoop out atherosclerotic plaque

Thrombolysis Less invasive Catheter procedure Clot-busting drug is administered

Prognosis Outcome will vary depending on several factors Length of time before treatment is given Severity of attack Efficacy of procedure
