3 Chap 1 A project is a complex, non-routine, one-time effort limited by time, budget, resources, and performance specification designed to meet specific needs. Examples? What is a project? Program vs Project Management?

4 Chap 1 A clearly stated objective The scope / goals should be well constrained and definitive, providing a singular purpose for the project A specific life span with beginning and end The project life-cycle phases include design, development, fabrication, testing and operation Multiple departments or people working together Includes people with different expertise working as a team, coordinating their effort to address the project needs Usually something that has never been done before The effort associated with a project is non-routine and, to a greater or lesser extent, has unique features Specific time, cost and performance requirements Constraints drive accountability and can force trade-offs Characteristics of a Project

5 Chap 1 The Project Life Cycle Defining - Goals - Specifications - Tasks - Responsibilities Planning - Schedules- Budgets - Resources- Risks- Staffing Executing - Status reports- Changes- Quality - Forecasts Delivering - Train Customer - Transfer Documents - Release resources - Release staff - Lessons learned Project Managers use life cycle for managing projects? WHY?

6 Chap 1 Develop comprehensive schedules for all aspects of the project. Manage and monitor the project schedule baseline. Provide necessary input on scope control, dependency tracking and workflow maintenance. Identify and suggest ways to minimize risks. Create milestone checklists and monitor team progress. Participate in interviews. Prepare feedback on the performance of all team members for quarterly reviews. Prepare a weekly detailed status report for VP. Project Manager Responsibilities

Managing large cross-discipline teams Written and oral communication skills Challenges Develop and motivate team of members which you have no direct control Make trade-off decisions of technical nature outside your area of expertise Maintain a budget and timeline as members may be working other projects Perform tasks with the spotlight on you.

Projects with multiple disciplines requires the project manager to have the ability to manage both the Technical and Sociocultural aspects. Technical Aspects Scope WBS Schedules Resource allocation Budgets Trade Offs Status reports Sociocultural Aspects Leadership Problem solving Teamwork Negotiation Politics Customer expectations
