Faulty premise: If Jesus loves me – truly loves me – He won’t let me go through anything bad.

Luke 8:22-25 He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.

“ The word of God is being proclaimed in deeds of power, and people do respond differently—with fear and amazement, with fear and rejection, with the desire to join Jesus’ band of disciples and obedience, with faith, and with astonishment. Joel B. Green, The Gospel of Luke, (pp. 330–334). Grand Rapids, MI: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.

This Week’s Message: From Fear to Faith: Jesus over the devil Luke 8:26-39

26 Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 When Jesus had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs.

Luke 8: When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.)

Luke 8: Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. 32 Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.

Luke 8: When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 36 And those who had seen it told them how the demon- possessed man had been healed.

Luke 8: Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

“ There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist and magician with the same delight. C.S. Lewis, Preface to The Screwtape Letters

The setting Luke 8:26 26 Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.

The man’s condition Luke 8:27, 29b 27 When Jesus had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs…(For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.)

“ This poor, naked man was a mass of bleeding lacerations, scabs, infections, and scar tissue, living in a delirium of pain and masochistic displeasure. The man was wild, naked, unkempt, and ill, and as a result all were against him…In his lucid moments he surely realized how repulsive, unloved, and unwelcome he was. He was dehumanized, animalized, marginalized, and both frightening and fearful. R. Kent Hughes, Luke: That You May Know the Truth, Preaching the Word

“ The destructive power of the demonic on this man could hardly be portrayed more strikingly. Completely displaced from his community, living among the tombs, he might as well be dead. Moreover, the repetition of the words “demon,” demons,” and “unclean spirit” (point to) the development of this scene as an encounter of cosmic proportions. Joel B. Green, The Gospel of Luke, (pp. 330–334). Grand Rapids, MI: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.

Recognition of Jesus Luke 8:28-29a 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.

Luke 8:22-25 In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

An exorcism Luke 8: Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. 32 Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission.

“The Abyss” Matthew 25:41 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’”

“The Abyss” 2 Peter 2:4 4 For God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment…

Proof of the exorcism Luke 8: Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.

The people’s reaction Luke 8: When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind…

“ Instead of being driven by the demon, he was “sitting”; instead of being without clothes, he was “dressed”; instead of being among the tombs, he was “at Jesus’ feet”; and instead of being “chained hand and foot and kept under guard”, he was “in his right mind”. This, even more than the drowning of the swine, demonstrates that the demons had left him. The demons’ prisoner had been freed from their oppression. R.H. Stein, Luke (Vol. 24, pp. 217–221), Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers

The people’s reaction Luke 8:34-37 …and they were afraid. 36 And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed man had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned.

What’s next for this guy? Luke 8: The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.
