“Power over Evil” Mark 5:1-20 08/23/2009 Dr. Dane Boyles

“Power over Evil” –Today we find Jesus and his disciples crossing again BUT this time the storm is on land. –Humanity is caught up in a supernatural battlefield. –When Jesus landed He entered enemy territory as far as evil is concerned.

“Power over Evil” 3 “This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain.” (Mark 5:3) 4 “For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.” (Mark 5:4)

“Power over Evil” 5 “Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.” (Mark 5:5)

“Power over Evil” –The scripture says that immediately He lands and the powers of evil know who He is. 6 “When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of Him. (Mark 5:6)

“Power over Evil” 6 …He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won’t torture me!” (Mark 5:6)

“Power over Evil” –It is obvious that the demon knows something men deny. 1.That God exists. 2.That evil beings will be tortured for doing evil.

“Power over Evil” –Did you notice as well that Jesus didn’t have to introduce himself? 19 Even the demons believe and shudder (James 2:19). –So what brought on such a transformation in the demon-possessed man? 8 “For Jesus had said to him, ‘Come out of this man, you evil spirit!’” (Mark 5:8)

“Power over Evil” –Up to this point the evil had pretended to be singular. 9 “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many”. (Mark 5:9)

“Power over Evil” –Here’s Mark’s point: though they are many, they are powerless, they are helpless before Jesus. 10 “And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area” (Mark 5:10)

“Power over Evil” 11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” (Mark 5:11-12)

“Power over Evil” 13 He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. (Mark 5:13)

“Power over Evil” –Now, what cost would you think a community would be willing to pay for such a freedom? 14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. (Mark 5:14)

“Power over Evil” 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. (Mark 5:15-16)

“Power over Evil” –What is it that makes faith in God so hard? –Evil uses all kinds of ways to entice us to believe that it doesn’t exist. –So what’s the answer? –You see, the cost of pigs were too high.

“Power over Evil” 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region. (Mark 5:17)

“Power over Evil” –They couldn’t see “Jesus” because they were worried about having lost their pigs. 18 to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God. (Acts 26:18)

“Power over Evil” 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (2 Cor. 4:4)

“Power over Evil” 15 …disarm the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. (Col. 2:15)

“Power over Evil” 18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. (Mark 5:18)

“Power over Evil” 19 “Jesus said, ‘Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how He has had mercy on you.’” (Mark 5:19) –This point is so important because it is what the Lord Jesus says to me and to you.

Ephesians 2:4 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions.

Romans 5:8 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

2 Corinthians 5:21 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

“Power over Evil” Mark 5:1-20 08/23/2009 Dr. Dane Boyles

The Grace of God Go and tell everyone how great the mercy of God is!
