D IVINE R ESTORATION : F ROM A M ADMAN TO A M ISSIONARY (P ART 2) Mark 5:1-20

D IVINE R ESTORATION 1 They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. 2 When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him, 3 and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain; 4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.

D IVINE R ESTORATION 5 Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones. 6 Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; 7 and shouting with a loud voice, he said, What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!

D IVINE R ESTORATION 8 For He had been saying to him, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit! 9 And He was asking him, What is your name? And he said to Him, My name is Legion; for we are many. 10 And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain. 12 The demons implored Him, saying, Send us into the swine so that we may enter them.

D IVINE R ESTORATION 13 Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea. 14 Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon- possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the legion; and they became frightened.

D IVINE R ESTORATION 16 Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the swine. 17 And they began to implore Him to leave their region. (Mark 5:1-17) The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. (John 10:10)

A N I LLUSTRATION 7 Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; 8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. (1 John 3:7-8)

A N I LLUSTRATION 14 Since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of deaththat is, the devil 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. (Hebrews 2:14-15)

O N THE O FFENSIVE 10 And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain. 12 The demons implored Him, saying, Send us into the swine so that we may enter them. 13 Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea. (Mark 5:10-13)

O WNER OF A LL The earth is the Lords, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. (Psalm 24:1) Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the highest heavens, the earth and all that is in it. (Deuteronomy 10:14) The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; the world and all it contains, You have founded them. (Psalm 89:11)

O WNER OF A LL Who has given to Me that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is Mine. (Job 41:11) For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authoritiesall things have been created through Him and for Him. (Colossians 1:16)

W HY D O T HIS ? 1. 1.Visible Proof of Deliverance 2. 2.Visible Picture of the Deadly Intentions of the Demons 3. 3.Visible Presentation of Christs Power over the Kingdom of Darkness

W HY D O T HIS ? But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. (Matthew 12:28)

T HE C ITY S R EACTION 14 Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the legion; and they became frightened. 16 Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the swine. 17 And they began to implore Him to leave their region. (Mark 5:14-17)

T HE C ITY S R EACTION Never is a man in his right mind till he is converted, or in his right place till he sits by faith at the feet of Jesus, or rightly clothed till he has put on the Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 13:14). Have we ever considered what real conversion to God is? It is nothing else than the miraculous release of a captive, the miraculous restoration of a man to his right mind, the miraculous deliverance of a soul from the devil. What are we ourselves? This, after all, is the grand question which concerns us. Are we slaves of Satan or servants of God? Has Christ set us free, or does the devil yet reign in our hearts? Do we sit at the feet of Jesus daily? Are we in our right minds? May the Lord help us to answer these questions aright! – J. C. Ryle, Expository Thoughts on Luke

T HE C ITY S R EACTION 16 Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the swine. 17 And they began to implore Him to leave their region. (Mark 5:16-17)

T HE C ITY S R EACTION 17 For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the One and Only Son of God. (John 3:17-18)

T HE C ITY S R EACTION 19 This, then, is the judgment: The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone who practices wicked things hates the light and avoids it, so that his deeds may not be exposed. (John 3:19-20)

T HE M AN S R EACTION 18 As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was imploring Him that he might accompany Him. 19 And He did not let him, but He said to him, Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you. 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed. (Mark 5:18-20)
