Life is Cool Lesson #1

Your Organs and Tissues

The Heart  Found on the left side of the chest  A pump made of four chambers  Pumps blood throughout the body  Blood carries oxygen to all the cells of the body

The Heart

How Your Heart Works  man.html man.html

Lungs  One on each side of the chest One left lung One right lung  Take in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide  Place where air exchange happens  Exchanges gasses (oxygen and carbon dioxide) in blood

Kidneys  One on each side of the body toward the back  Main job is to filter the blood Phosphorus Sodium/Salt  Also help maintain body’s fluid balance Excess salt causes kidneys to hold onto extra fluid  Turns liquid waste into urine

Liver · A large organ that has 3 lobes or sections ·Helps store and filter the blood ·Makes bile and helps digest fatty foods

Pancreas  Located behind the stomach  Helps the body use sugar by making insulin  Helps digest food

Small Intestine  Runs from the end of the stomach to start of large intestine  Completes food digestion  Works to absorb nutrients from food

Review  Name the main job of each of the following organs: Heart Lungs Kidneys Liver Pancreas Small Intestine
