The Mass as Thanksgiving To describe types of thanksgiving (L3) To explain why we need to thank God (L4) To evaluate types of thanksgiving (L5) 1.What sort of things are we “lucky” to have ? Mindmap them. **Why is it a matter of “luck” that we have them?

Often, people want to thank God especially for things that they feel are an unexpected blessing. 1.Physical health & wellbeing 2.Freedom to live as you like 3.Being safe. 4.Having a loving family and home 5.Having friends 6.Having an education. 7.Having food and water 8.Having technology 9.Having animals and nature around 10.Having opportunities to put your knowledge and skills to use : having a hope for the future. 11.Having a life, being made to exist 12.Having God in your life 1.Choose 2 things you think are really important to thank God for. Explain why they are important. 2.Why are some of these good things a matter of luck to have? **Which thing are we always guaranteed to have?

1.What does the word “Eucharist” mean? 2.What do we thank God for, in the Mass? 3.How do we thank God during the mass? Look at the pictures - what is being done and how does it show thanksgiving? **Why is offering up Jesus in sacrifice, the best “thank you” present we can give to God? How can we thank God? Mass is also called “The Eucharist” - this means thanksgiving in Greek. People felt this was an appropriate way to describe the Mass – because Jesus’ sacrifice is what gives us God’s life into our hearts. So we need to thank Him for Jesus, and for the continuous blessings we receive, even down to our life itself, which is His gift to us. So it is not surprising that you can find many ways of thanking God during a Mass.

The Offertory Procession is when people bring up the “gifts” of bread and wine, and the collection money. These gifts symbolise ALL our work and struggles, offered to God in love. Subtitle “Offertory Procession”. 1.Draw a line of 3 stick people going up to the priest at the altar, carrying bread, wine, money. 2.Write underneath what kind of offerings to God these gifts could symbolise: Eg an achievement, Eg something you struggled with Eg something you did out of love.

Write your own prayer of thanksgiving to say after receiving Holy Communion. Make it into a Mass card/ bookmark. Thank you Lord for this Eucharist: For the priest; For the people gathered; For the Word proclaimed; For the bread and the wine. For the sacrifice of Your body and blood: May it give me strength to do Your will And lead me to life everlasting. Amen.

What sort of thanking is going on here ?

Bidding Prayers Bidding prayers ask God for help They can also be used to thank God for something. – Look back at one of your stories from last lesson – Based on that story, write 4 bidding prayers to ask God for something and thank him for something connected to that story
