Aalborg University Hospital - The Ideas Clinic Valerie Daussin Laurent Business Developer

Aalborg University Hospital University Hospital since employees in Aalborg, around for the whole region Several locations Special sectors Ideklinikken 15 employees Industrial designer Engineers Legal adviser Business Developer Sociologist Product Innovation Service Innovation Ambassador corp

Facts about Ideklinikken new ideas per year Product and Research Innovation Service innovation Workflow Patient safety 80 on-going projects 15 projects in commercialization phase 13 patent applications

It is the right Balance between Creativeness and Structure, that gives results.

Examples Employee Driven Innovation 5

6 MamaOno - a carrying sling, highly suited for premature babies Background: MIPS project or how to involve employee in a user-driven innovation proces Workshop based on training course on innovation in the health care sector The problem: Existing products not suitable for very small babies Difficult to put on when no staff was available Insufficient time for skin to skin contact between the parents and the child

A collaboration with a local company 7 From prototype 1 to final product Test and validation Production Final product ready for sale in the early 2014 ( The First!!!) Link til Video: PyjyVXEhttps:// PyjyVXE

Challenges faced when working with user driven innovation 8 Niche market vs. Globalt market IPR: Tool or necessity? CE-mark of medical devices Collaboration issues with industry Production vs. distribution: who to deal with?

Research Driven Innovation 9

A Strech Sensor Device: journey of an invention 10 Idea started in 2006, without satisfying technologies to solve the problem In 2010, collaboration between a research fysiotherapist and engineers Development phase 2 years development and test A patent application in september 2011 A software program ready for testing on patients in 2012 First tests real-time, different applications (foot but also training elastic, wrist movements…)

11 Our invention : Composed of three parts: - A sensor attached to the foot : the sensor consists of a thin piece of elastic silicon film (stretch sensor converting stretch extension to voltage resistance) - A communication interface that sends data 200 per second to a data logger - A software part that automatically load data from the data logger and show the movement of the the foot

Commercialization 12 Started as soon as the patent has been filed Focussing on distribution for clinician market segment 4 to 6 mio. DKK for final development and CE mark of the product Status today: - Spin out between RN, 2 industrial partners and 2 investors - international collaboration regarding clinical validation and distribution (Australien, New Zealand, Germany…) Product expected on the market at the end of 2015

What we have learnt It takes time To be known and acknowledged (internally as well as externally) To build a relevant portefolio To bring an idea to market To build an efficient network of industrial partners To have a structured process to screene and develop. The process has to be revisited regularly. As an institution, you cannot promise to buy the product you are going to develop (purchasing rules in the public sector) Collaboration with local companies: serious issues to support the development phases and the CE-mark (financing PoC) Research driven innovation: A lot of time, money and validation Can we spin out without the researchers to drive the new established company? 13 Thanks for your attention !
