Considerations  The 5 W’s Who will use the boat? Friends, family or business associates What is the purpose for owning the boat? Short cruises, long cruises, dayboating When will the boat be used? Weekends, vacations, seasonal or year round Where will the boat be used? Local cruising, extended trips Why purchase the boat? Fishing, cruising, dayboating Slide 2

Considerations  Personal preferences Cruising Boat amenities  How is the boat equipped; can it be added  Define what is really needed for cruising Preferred activities Locational determinants Slide 3 Cruising boat selection is a compromise

The Cruising Boat  If purchasing, consider a used boat Fully equipped Some replacement costs for older items  Cruising needs  Powerboat or sailboat  Inland or coastal Slide 4

Powerboats  More suited to inland waters  Greater speed; greater fuel requirements  More cabin space  Trawlers suited for coastal and inland  Many cruising powerboats have low air height compared to sailboats Slide 5

Powerboats and Engines  Diesel vs. Gasoline  Diesel engine is more expensive  Diesel gives better fuel economy and range  Gasoline: less economy but higher speed Slide 6

Sailboats  Cruising boats come in all sizes Size will be determined by the number of people using the boat Sailboats have an infinite range  Used boats may be a better value More equipment on sailboats  Sailboat design is another consideration Mono and multihulls Sail configuration: ketch, cutter, yawl, schooner Changes over the decades  Weather  Auxiliary power Slide 7
