An Introduction to Compasses, Charts & Piloting
Finding Your Way On The Water
The purpose of this short slide presentation is to enable addressing a public Boat Smart class and to announce the offering by the local Power Squadron of a 3 week, free course (no charge for the course instruction) as a public service for safer and more enjoyable boating.
The intent of this course is to attract the more serious group of cruising boaters who will benefit the most from the material. This course will also provide additional "face time" with potential members, thus permitting them to better understand the benefits of membership within USPS.

An introduction to the basics of piloting including:
Compasses & TVMDC
Charts & 60D=ST
Position Determination via latitude & longitude
Dead Reckoning

Understand the myriad of data on a nautical chart
Utilize basic plotting tools - plotter & dividers
Use your chart & plotting tools to establish a course
Use your ship's compass to follow a course
Estimate your position on a course
