Samuel Peploe ( ) Samuel Peploe was born in 1871 in Edinburgh. He was educated at the Collegiate School in Charlotte Square. He had good academic ability but was mainly interested in walking, sailing or sketching. He devoted himself to his study of oil painting. His main subjects included Still Life/ Portrait and Landscape. In 1893 he enrolled for classes at the Trustees Academy (the forerunner to Edinburgh School of Art). Edinburgh in 1871

Samuel Peploe ( ) Later he went to Paris, to the Acad é mie Julian and later studied at the Acad é mie Colarossi. He had a powerful influence on many artists of the next generation.

Samuel Peploe Iona Beach Scene Peploe also began taking painting trips to Northern France, Kirkcudbright, and the Western Isles from around He particularly liked IONA, and was joined there by Scottish Colourist J D Fergusson whom he had met in Paris. He went there every summer. Peploe liked the rocky northern end of the island and its views towards Mull. He liked the island ’ s light, and dramatic, changeable weather. He painted it in all weathers and abandoned the warm colours of his still-lifes for a palette of cool greens and blues. The island became a sanctuary for him, a world away from life in Edinburgh, its picture-postcard scenery also meant that his paintings were readily saleable to his rich clientele in the city.

Samuel Peploe Peploe was successful in exhibiting his work and regularly submitted paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute and the Society of Scottish Artists. Peploe ’ s first one-man show was held at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh in By 1906 his earlier still life and figure paintings, characterised by dark backgrounds, gave way to paler colours, greys and pinks. This was due to a move to a new lighter studio in the East end of Edinburgh at York Place. His second exhibition in 1909 was successful but his eyes were turning to Paris and the next year, he moved to France with his new wife, Margaret MacKay, whom he had met on a painting trip to the Isle of Barra in For the next fifteen years Peploe retained a brilliant palette, evolving a mature style containing elements of Cezanne ’ s and Matisse ’ s paint technique.

Samuel Peploe In 1933 Peploe taught two terms at Edinburgh College of Art making quite an impact. Peploe was best known for his still life paintings of roses, tulips, and other common household objects. Peploe had a wide range of subjects including figure and landscape painting.

Samuel Peploe Peploe ’ s Still life paintings used a style which involved loose brushwork, strong colour schemes and sometimes black outlines. He also used tonal ranges of the same colour eg: all shades of blue in one painting. He was known as a SCOTTISH COLOURIST - this was due to his bright use of colour and his use of painting techniques he had seen in Paris around Peploe was also famous for his commission work. He painted still lifes for the rich and well to do in Edinburgh society. Some of these paintings feature expensive household objects, Chinese vases etc.
