Mountain A mountain is a place on Earth’s surface that is much higher than the land around it.                                      

Hills A area of raised land that is smaller than a mountain.

Valley A valley is a low area between higher lands such as mountains or hills/                                                           

Plain A plain is a flat area on Earth’s surface.

Plateau A plateau is a flat area higher than the land around it.

Island An island is a body of land that has water all around it.

Peninsula A strip of land that is surrounded by water on three sides, like the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Isthmus A narrow strip of land that connects two large areas of land.

Delta Low land that is formed by deposition at the mouth of a river.

Canyon A large crack in the earth formed by rivers or earthquakes. This is Oak Creek Canyon in Arizona.

Coast A coast is the area where the ocean touches the land.

Water Forms or Bodies of Water 1. Lake 7. Wetland 2. River 8. Waterfall 3. Ocean 4. Strait 5. Bay 6. Pond

Lake A lake is water that has land all around it.

River A river is a long flowing body of water.

Ocean Oceans are the largest bodies of water on earth and are salt water.

Strait A channel of water that connects two larger areas of water. Often used for shipping lanes.

Bay An area of water that is mostly surrounded by land. Bays can be safe spots for boats to anchor.

Pond A very small body of water surrounded by land.

Wetland An area of wet, soggy land with many pools of water or with standing water. Both a landform and waterform!

Waterfall A place where there is a drop in elevation and water falls over a cliff or down rocks.
