What are Landforms? 6th Grade Social Studies

What are landforms? Landforms are the natural shapes or features called landforms. There are many different types of landforms found on the earth.

archipelago An archipelago is a group or chain of islands clustered together in a sea or ocean.

bay A bay is a body of water that is partly enclosed by land (and is usually smaller than a gulf).

canyon A canyon is a deep valley with very steep sides.

cay Small low island, key often made from coral, sand, or volcanic material

mountain A mountain is a place on Earth’s surface that is much higher than the land around it.

valley A valley is a lowland area between higher lands such as mountains.

plateau A plateau is a flat area higher than the land around it.

island An island is land that is completely surrounded by water.

delta A low, watery land formed at the mouth of a river. It is formed from the silt, sand and small rocks that flow downstream in the river and are deposited in the delta. A delta is often shaped like a triangle.

desert A desert is a hot dry place with little or no rainfall.

glacier A glacier is a long- lasting, slowly- moving river of ice on land.

island An island is a piece of land that is surrounded by water.

isthmus An isthmus is a narrow strip of land connecting two larger landmasses. An isthmus has water on two sides.

mountain A mountain is a very tall high, natural place on Earth - higher than a hill. The tallest mountain on Earth is Mt. Everest.

peninsula A part of land surrounded on three sides by water.

Plateau plateau A plateau is a large, flat area of land that is higher than the surrounding land

reef A reef is a rock, sandbar, or other feature lying just beneath the surface of the water.

river A river is a long flowing body of water.

sound A sound is a wide inlet of the sea or ocean that is parallel to the coastline; it often separates a coastline from a nearby island.

tributary A tributary is a stream or river that flows into a larger river.

Valley valley A valley is a low place between mountains.

volcano A volcano is a mountainous vent in the Earth's crust. When a volcano erupts, it spews out lava, ashes, and hot gases from deep inside the Earth.

waterfall When a river falls off steeply, there is a waterfall.

wetland A wetland is an area of land that is often wet; the soil in wetlands are often low in oxygen. Wetland plants are adapted to life in wet soil.
