Applications for Web Development (CIS 162) Week#3 – Client Needs Analysis Mock Client Interview

Group Activity (scenario) The whole web design class has been approached by a local newspaper and asked if we could put together a bunch of (brief) biographical pages about us - the local web design students at the local college.

Group Activity(scenario) The purpose of each biographical page is to enable readers to: ▫see a little into the life of a student ▫their goals and aspirations ▫likes and dislikes ▫world-views ▫hobbies ▫views on current events They've asked also if an aspect of each page-design could reflect something of the persons character (such as the choice of colors, font or theme graphics).

Group Activity(scenario) The newspaper has asked for the pages to be in designed in either, Adobe Publisher (submit as a PDF), MS Word, MS PowerPoint, or XHTML. Note: Anyone that has a different software preference, please contact me for prior approval, using the key words “Approval Requested” in your subject. Purpose of this activity ▫Give you the opportunity to experience the role of BOTH the client and the designer

Partner/Team Activity Individual Process: Planning client interview - 10 mins Conduct the interview – You may choose to conduct your interview online, phone, skype, etc. ~30 mins (~15 mins each) Gather your (design) thoughts – 10 mins

Partner/Team Activity cont. Individual Process: Create Bio page (in Publisher, MS Word, etc.) - ~60 mins (or longer, depending on your page!) I am not necessary looking for anything extensive, I am mostly looking for your individual design, color, layout, etc. concepts. Post-Process Reflection After you have completed your interview and bio page, I would like you to write a few sentences reflecting each step of your process (writing no less than 3 paragraphs total). This should be posted to your own blog. Your reflection should: Evaluate your experience as the interviewer and interviewee (clearly define each role in your review). Identify your communication tool of choice ( , phone, etc.) and how that may have effected your experience. Would you change this in the future? Explain how you approached the design process and how satisfied you are with the end result. Identify the approximate time you spent on each part of the process. Include any additional reflective information that would be helpful to yourself and/or your classmates to consider when conducting a “real” client interview/design approach.

Planning your client interview As well as the normal details such as names, interests, motivations etc., you may want to run with a theme or metaphor for your client's bio page and interview. ▫If you’re client is an avid fisherman or owns a dance studio, these could be good theme options to consider as part of your implementation.

Planning your client interview Be as creative as you feel comfortable, but remember that the person you're interviewing is your client - you are creating the page to reflect their personality, not your own! ▫Ask relevant questions ▫Be sure to “listen” to your client carefully

Your goal in the interview Learn as much as you can about the client’s needs, goals, desires, etc.

To Submit / Post Client Interview Questions (and notes) ▫Provide me a list of the questions that you have asked your client along with your client’s response. ▫Be sure to include and identify the name and title of both the Interviewer and Interviewee. Your final design – HTML, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, or Publisher file(s) Post-Process Reflection (

Have Fun! me if you have any questions You will receive feedback to your week #1 & #2 homework assignments toward the end of the week
