Presentation transcript:

Design Project Experience: Goals n The goal is to provide our students with a significant design experience which incorporates several technical subject areas and which provides experience in working as part of a design team. n The project should follow all phases from conceptualization, to design specifications, project planning with milestones and manpower assignment, project work with appropriate progress tracking, design testing, final reporting and presentation of the results. n This design project is also intended to fulfil the CEAB design experience requirement

CEAB Requirements: (Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board Accreditation Criteria and Procedures, 1998, Section 2.2.4) n “The engineering curriculum must culminate in a significant design experience which is based on the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier course work and which preferably gives students an exposure to the concepts of team work. A research project may be interpreted as engineering design provided it can be clearly shown that the elements of design, as noted in the definition, are fulfilled in the completion of the project.”

Design Project Experience: Requirements n Design teams of 4 students. n A full course load of 10 hours per week in 4A. (about 480 person hours) n A challenging design that focuses on more than one technical area. n The resulting design must be testable against design specifications. n Design project management is an important element. n The design work must be presented in an open forum.

Design Project Experience: Implementation n A three course sequence from 3B to 4B (details to follow) n Project sources: –faculty –students –industry n Project support: –faculty consultants (technical support) –design project coordinator (administrative support) –lab and computer facilities

Design Project Experience: Courses n E&CE 391, "Engineering Design Concepts” This course is being introduced in 3BE and 3BQ beginning in the fall term, It will be a half course with a 0.25weight, and a credit/no-credit evaluation. The course will provide background instruction for design project work, facilitate the formation of project groups and selection projects, and will require the students to prepare and present their design project proposals.

Design Project Experience: Courses n E&CE 492A, "Engineering Design Project” This course represents the main project work to be completed in 4A and will be introduced for the first time in the spring term This is also the first term when the 4A streams will be merged. The course represents a full course load which replaces on technical elective course, although a 0.15 weighting will assigned to reflect the 30% of the mark that will be evaluated in this 4A term. The mark will be based on an interim project report.

Design Project Experience: Courses n E&CE 492B, "Engineering Design Symposium” This course represents the presentation of the results of the design projects in an open symposium format and will be held for the first time in the winter term The formal presentation, along with a poster presentation, will make up 20% of the total mark for the design project. The final project report will also be evaluated in this term and will account for 50% of the mark. This means that a 0.35 weight will be assigned to the course to reflect 70% of the mark, although the student load will be much lighter for this portion of the design project.

Design Project Experience: Course Calendar Descriptions 391 (F, W) E&CE 391Engineering Design Concepts 2S* 0.25** 3B February 1999 Calendar Description: Seminar preparing students for the engineering design project done in E&CE 492A/B. Discussion of the requirements and available resources. Brief examination of design approaches, project- management issues, and illustrative case studies. Students form a four-person project group, determine a project topic, present/discuss it in class, and complete a project-approval process. Prerequisites: Registration in the 3B term of either Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering. * Nine selected weeks. ** Graded as CR/NOCR

Design Project Experience: Course Calendar Descriptions 492A (S) E&CE 492AEngineering Design Project10P 0.15* 4A February 1999 Calendar Description: Individual and group work comprising the design activity and report-preparation phases of the engineering design project. The team-oriented project is to comprise a significant design experience based on the knowledge and skills acquired by students in previous courses and on cooperative work terms. Project groups reconfirm project approval, establish and maintain progress monitoring through a faculty consultant, complete the design work, and submit a written interim report. Groups also prepare the written final report and presentations delivered in E&CE 492B. Prerequisites: E&CE 391 and registration in the 4A term of either Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering. * An additional 0.35 credit for the project work is associated with E&CE 492B.

Design Project Experience: Course Calendar Descriptions 492B (W) E&CE 492BEngineering Design Symposiumwkshp 0.35* 4BFebruary 1999 Calendar Description: Communication component of the engineering design project. Submission of a written final report for the project work done in E&CE 492A. Lecture-style technical presentation by group members in a one-half-hour time slot. Poster-style technical presentation with group members available to discuss the project. Prerequisites: E&CE 391, E&CE 492A, and registration in the 4B term of either Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering. * Includes credit for project work completed in E&CE 492A.
