Classifying Government Participation Democracy People hold the sovereign power and the government is conducted only by and with the consent of the people Direct: Town Hall Meeting Indirect: Representative Committees

Classifying Government Participation Dictatorship Rulers are not responsible to the will of the people Autocracy: single person holds unlimited power Oligarchy: power held by a small usually self-appointed elite Authoritarian Absolute and unchallengeable authority over the people Totalitarian Exercises complete power over nearly every aspect of human affairs Modern examples: Fascist Italy, People’s Republic of China, Libya (Kaddafi) Militaristic
