This project will consist of each student searching for an ad on the newspaper for a discounted coupon and figuring out how much they will be saving. Each student will have an a hundred dollar budget without going over. They will put the clippings on the poster board along with showing all the work they did to obtain their answers. This unit will be targeting 6 th grade students.

Essential Question Can math help me understand the world around me? Unit Question How can a percentage be used in my life? Content Questions What is a percentage? What is a discount?

1.4 Calculate given percentages of quantities and solve problems involving discounts at sales, interest earned, and tips. 3.1 Evaluate the reasonableness of the solution in the context of the original situation. 3.2 Note the method of deriving the solution and demonstrate a conceptual understanding of the derivation by solving similar problems. 3.3 Develop generalizations of the results obtained and the strategies used and apply them in new problem situations.

Students will find a coupon in the newspaper and will organize, reflect and process the percentage saved on the item. Students will connect percentages with real life situations. Students will understand how to use discounts.

The project focuses on important learning objectives aligned with standards. This project will include student-centered learning. The project has real-world connections. Throughout the project students will have a few assessments to ensure high quality work. Thinking skills are integral to project work.

KWL KWL charts will be given out before and after the unit to compare what the students have learned. Journal Students will keep daily journals to follow up with what they have accomplished. Assessment
